  • memcal /chip issues

I have an '89 beretta that I transplanted a 3400 into. I am having problems with getting a chip to work in it. I bought a memcal adapter for it and had a member of another forum burn me a chip to get the multec II injectors to work but when the memcal adapter is installed the CEL is on, the cooling fan is running all the time and the digital dash is dead. When I take the memcal adapter out everything works as advertised but it is running rich I think. the custom chip is a copy of my original program that has been modified for the multec II's
Is it all right to drive with the stock chip and multec II's for the time being. Is the memcal adapter my issue? I am wondering if the memcal adapter is either miswired or broken.
Has anyone done a 3400 swap into a car with the digital dash and is there something special needed with my setup?

sounds like either the chip is in backwards.
    or bad burn.
    or faulty adapter.

you can try to set the prom ID to AA
which makes the ecm bypass the checksum check

I would think digital dash wouldn't matter, IIRC you can swap between them without issue, so I don't think computer is an issue there.

You will run extremely rich at idle and cruise speeds with the multec2's. Engine will bog and probably isn't good to wash the cylinders down with gas like that.

The chip is not in backwards, I thought that too and switched it around and the car wouldn't even start.

the gauges work when I have the stock chip in it, as soon as I put the memcal adapter with the custom burned chip I get everything above. and the computer is not the problem, I have a spare that I swapped in with the same issues. I am going to get a new memcal adapter to try.

Chip connected to the adapter right? If so, id say your custom chip isn't compatible with your digital dash and its also probably not right. Are you running the multecs at 43.5 psi or 55?

The digital dash is tied into the stock chip somehow. The stock chip is plugged into the side of the adapter with the custom chip on top of the adapter. The program from my stock chip is the one that was modified for the multecII's and burned to the chip.
I have the 2000+ FPR so I am running 55 psi.
What are my options to getting this pig running right?

Get an ALDL cable and a chip programmer. Hopefully you have a laptop already.

                http://www.beretta.net/faq/techfaq.htm #11.

It seems the interior wiring is different between the analog and digital but the same computer can be used.

I have a laptop and an ALDL cable but have yet to get the 2 to talk sucessfully. I don't know if my cable is the issue or programming. I bought my cable from Mastach.com and it is a serial cable. I am using a serial to USB converter, might that be part of my problem? While in TPrt it shows the cable connected and working.

The serial/usb converter is most likely the problem. I've heard a lot of people having problems with them. As far as which brand works, I have no clue.

Cool Ive done quite a bit of business with them. You can get the adapter cheaper but theirs is a quality piece as well. What chip are you using on the adapter?

Both of the chips I have are 27sf512's

another ? what about an Ostrich instead of a chip? I am thinking that is the way I want to go so I don't have to handle the chips and risk messing them up.
