Maybe FS: memcal adapter

Would anybody here be interested in memcal adapters like the ones sold at Moates:



?? Basically, they allow you to keep your memcal/prom stock, and use your own custom programmed chips. I've spent hours clipping, desoldering, soldering chip holders into memcals, and have decided it sucks! Big time!

But, moates' adapter is $35 + shipping! Agh! I think if I get a qty of 100, I can get the cost down to $20 shipped. Or, if you can solder (and save me some time), I can sell you the "kit" for $15 shipped. Includes all the parts, you assemble and solder them. What do you think? Worth pursuing? I might have to go for this just to save myself some time, because "dechiping" is a PITA!

When you design yours, make sure it will allow for the use of an emulator cable coming out through the ECM. It is tricky to fit the cable out.

Well without pics, I'll just have to put a disclaimer for those with emulators, that it may or may not fit.

I believe I should also put a hole in the board to physically tie the memcal onto the board. Then you won't have to worry about it shaking loose.

likely not unless you drop the ECM, or put a sub behind it...

I mean there must have been a reason to have those little positive retention clips on the side of the memcal, right? If they weren't there, it would be no problem to remove/install them... So I figure after x years they must have had problems with memcals rattling out or something.

When the memcal is installed on the board, and the board installed on the ECM, there's no room for the board to pop off the ECM, so the only real issue I see is the memcal possibly coming off. Better safe than sorry, IMHO. It doesn't cost any extra to put a 1/4" hole in the board. If you don't want to cable tie your memcal, that's your option.

Just wrap a few layers of masking tape around it. If it dries out and gets brittle it will still hold to itself untill you need to remove it. Looks like a zip tie would fit on the picture above anyways without a hole.

I'd be in on this if I had a car that could use these chips.. I'd get the cheap route and just solder the pins no problem. But alas, I have bastard 94 odb1.5 crap...

It's official. I just ordered 50 boards. I think it's much better than Moates' version. It will have a slot to line up the memcal so you don't install it backwards, and it will have the hole if you want to secure it with a cable tie.

They'll be here/ready in appx 2-3 weeks.

i got some samples from maxim last year and i just tested them, and found out that only 1 of the 4 i got works, and 1 of the chips looks like it was used had solder on the legs
they were unbaked, which is kinda crappy as the life of an unbaked chip is apparently up to 12 months, and baking a chip takes months lol was doing alittle research online...
