  • Cloyes wasn't very good for the stock replacements (or have I lost my mind on this discussion in the past). This was the non double roller style chains. GM chains says Morse USA on them. Not sure what any of the others say but just letting you know. I thought it was Jon that went through 1000 timing setups to figure out only the GM gears and chains were worth a damn.

    • This is where all the confusion sets in(no pun intended lol)... The SA Gear sprockets yeah I would say are complete junk... The Cloyes sprockets I got for my original 3400 way back when are shown in the newly pinned timing sets thread, so I don't trust them either since that was on a stock motor... I use Morse chains in my transmission; that's the OEM replacement and the simple fact that I saw this SA Gear chain have the Morse tag on the links is why I decided to use it. Other than that I will only use the GM sprockets since they have proven to hold up the best.

When I did my full GM set back in 09 I think it was or 08 I noticed even with all new parts there was quite a bit of slack, BUT it ended up being quite and lasted till just last year... So this time around I tried to find the tightest combo... I went and ordered a Full SA set and test fitted it, found it to be nice and tight not much slack, cheap sprockets I would never use though. I then tested the SA chain on the OEM sprockets and it fit the same way. The GM chain that I had before this DRTC was loose and the one with 94k on it from a 3100 was also test fitted and was just as loose in my opinion, maybe a touch tighter.

I will definitely post my results with this SA chain when I do have the motor out again, but so far so good... I've had to drive the car quite a bit since bfest with my subie being down and it's still quite as can be over there. I do believe I've put 2k on it since then.

I don't think this is the fix all chain, but I hope at least with it starting tight and maybe being the quality that Morse puts out then it should last a decent amount of time.

I really should try to find the chain that was removed back in 09 from my car and see if that says Morse on it... Since I believe that was a Cloyes set once again that I used... I know the crank sprocket was pretty beat though, and that set happened to come with a GM cam sprocket.

      • I bought a sealed power set, in which the cam gear was a GM gear. The crank gear appeared to be junk as well as the chain. I just used the cam gear and bought a GM chain and crank gear. I am curious of the quality of the comp cams set and if the chain is worth a crap. I know we wouldn't be able to use the cam gear on the roller cam motors though.

which set are you referring to? The Comp Cams for pre 94?

that one? That says for 2.8 only but we know the 3.1 is the same spacing so it should work up to 93 motors for my application. But at only 44.99 for the whole set, I wonder if it's all the same as the Cloyes and others...

The chain only PN is 3301...

                  • I'm glad to have heard an update. I don't mind waiting because my engine needs a new top end now anyway...

                            • If you got the previous email from him I can only assume you will get another when he has an update. I don't think asking here really helps anything unless you never got the latest update. He doesn't look at this forum anymore to my knowledge.

                              • I know its a little dead thread atm. Just stopped in to say I dropped mine off to milzy last week while I went out to his shop. Mine I wanted looked over. And will have oil slots added on the cam sprocket since it didn't have it.
