I am pasting a post that I made to my LQ1 stroker thread. Let me know if you are within driving distance of Warsaw, Indiana and would like to ship together to save freight.
(I have the opportunity to acquire a few more of the NVG transaxles at a very reasonable price ($250 shipped). In terms of the case, etc., it is identical to any other hydraulic TOB equipped NVG T550 / HM282 transaxle built for the Quad-4. The difference is the gearset. This is the somewhat rare gearset used in a handful of the W-41 cars. The FDR gearset alone sells for $800 at MantaPart. The internals are backwards compatible so they can be used in any Muncie (HM282) or New Venture (NVG T550) unit. Note that this NVG transaxle has the heavier differential (can be used in the Muncie case) compared to the earlier Muncie transaxles. At this price, it makes more sense to buy the transaxle for rebuild parts than it does to buy a rebuild kit with bearings and synchros.)
"..........I now have the transaxle I will be using behind my LQ. - It's one of the many surplus "4DFF" NVG T550 units (same as HM282 but made by New Venture) that were floating around a while back. It has the lower ratio final drive along with a slightly lower gearset. Here are the specs: 1st:3.77, 2nd:2.19, 3rd:1.38, 4th:1.06, 5th:0.80, FDR:3.94. With stock diameter '96 Z-24 (J-body) tires, this will yield 2,800rpm @ 60mph. These all have the Quad case (starter at 1 o'clock) with hydraulic TOB so I will be swaping out an older 60degree case half with external slave. If you'd like, I can post some pictures.
My source has about six more of these transaxles. - I am thinking about buying another for a backup. If anyone here is within driving distance of me and wants one, pm me. Maybe we can save some $$ on freight........"
