  • How much gail will 8 lbs of boost on a t3 make

the mechanic for my sand rails says that he is going to do a a t3 turbo on the 3.4.
Says he wont give it more than 8 lbs.
says I can crank her up if I want but his reccomendation is 8lbs and he wont waranty it otherwise.

so. with 8 lbs of boost
    no cat
    no efi
what kind of power can I expect?

probably a 50-60 hp gain with a good tune. Thats it.

Yea. The Turbo Grand Prix had a 3.1 that made 205hp on 7.5psi. THe base HP on the 3.1 on other cars is 140hp. So that's a 60hp jump. ON a 3.4 if its the 3400 its more..if its the Iron head..prob about the same jump in power.

The t3 has to be the .60 compressor and wheel. If its the smaller .40 or so..its too small to make more than 200hp.

what is the most boost a stock 3.4 can take while not tearing the engine apart?

Without knowing every component used its hard to say exacly.. BUT on 5-6PSI I made 91HP to the wheels. I have a T04E Super 60 (T4). different turbo's are going to give you different results. Impossable to say a number without knowing the complete setup (Turbo, Injectors, Fuel system, exhause setup...ect)

Tim G is running 10 PSI on a stock engine but he also has larger injectors and fuel/spark control

should be able to help you figure out approximately what to expect. Their turbocalc is free now. You will probably have to hunt down a compressor map that is labeled so that you know what your efficiency island is on the map. The object is to get as close as you possibly can to the highest efficiency island on the map in as much as your power band as possible because that's where the coolest air is and why different compressors running the same boost will give different power readings at the wheels, for example; 7psi at 200 degrees vs. 7 psi at 175 degrees, makes a big difference to the engine as well as leaves room for more boost without further anti detonation mods. I opted for two .60 compressor housings because at 10-14 psi I'll be above or right at 70% efficiency.

About a 100hp jump from stock is when things tend to give. Not having forged pistons is an issue and having a good gasket. THen having a good spark(higher energy coils) will be needed.

If your mechanic is good...he can get the 320hp out of the t3 with engine work.

THe carb guys usually use methanol though. You can get rid of the IC because methanol is a cooling agent too. I would look at a carb setup like Allan Moores. You can find it on turboford.org under FAQ.

Fuel system would be something like this...

                Fuel System
1 blow through 2bbl Holley 500 w/modified boosters. (prob need eldbrock intake for you)
3 needle and seats in one humungus float bowl.
                2 bosch 300Lb/hr @45psi pumps.
                1 gallon fuel cell.
                1 bypass regulator w/boost reference.
                Assorted a-n hoses and fittings.

At first I almost said "only 60 hp if you do something wrong" ... then I saw the no efi part... that sounds like the first thing done wrong there. The next thing I was going to ask was if it was intercooled or not. If you intercool it and are only running 8psi, there is no need for expensive fuel, so long as you don't have a compression ratio that is too high (beyond 9.5:1 or so).
