  • Need quick answer -T04E 50 trim, 57 trim or 60 trim for 3400

I have recently learned how to properly read compressor maps.. and Im thinking that the t4 50 trim hybrid (t3 .63 a/r hot) turbo is going to be the best suited for my 3400 build up. I plan on shooting for 400+ hp, at around 20 lbs of boost. I've got everything figured out, and I was set on a 57 trim compressor, but I think that may be the wrong choice. From my rough calculations, for this engine to make over 400 hp, it will require at least 45lbs/min airflow, and pressure ratio is 2.5-2.6. Looking at compressor maps side by side, here

50 trim is obviously the best choice. that point is way off the 57 trim map, and 60 trim is right at the choke line. If anyone else can verify this for me I'd appreciate it. I always thought that the higher the trim, the "bigger" or more the turbo will flow.. is this wrong? how can the 50 trim flow better then the 57??

RE: Need quick answer -T04E 50 trim, 57 trim or 60 trim for

Inducer and exducer sizing on the compressor wheel. A large inducer can inhale alot of air...a large exducer can compresso alot of air. The housing also plays a role at how well the exducer flows or pressurises.
Look for 1.5 Pressure ratio at 40 lbs min. How many did you find remotely close? Different turbos for different apps.

A turbo with a large inducer and small exducer on one housing could have the same 'TRIM" as a small inducer..large exducer on another housing. BUT they will not flow the same.

use the turbomap java calculator to plot some flow points - they all flow a bit differently

Ok, I've now discovered that the t3/t4 60-1 trim comes with a 360 degree thrust bearing.. and the turbo itself is only 70 dollars more. After talking with somemore people, Im starting to lean towards this turbo.. except I was advised to go with a .82 exhaust a/r, and I think I should go with the .63 a/r, same turbo that Curtis is running his car into the low 12's with.. if im not mistaken.

get the .82. You can sacrifice the lag for more top end. even with the .82 it will spool fast.

the .63 willjust choke you off up top.

agreed, I ran a .63 T3/4 on a 3100 and it spooled very quickly but lost alot of topend though I could roast the tires and was making boost before 2500rpm

Well I got my turbo today
I went with the .82 a/r. I didnt realize that the turbine housing is an easy swap, and they only cost $125, so I will just swap to the .63 a/r if need be (I dont think I will need to). Also picked up a tial 38mm wastegate and tial bov. Best 1200 bucks I ever spent. Will let everyone know how I make out.

Any progress to report on this thing? A turbo Beretta 3400 would just have to scream!

I don't think that will matter You do realize what happen at around 3,000 RPM right? That is around peak torque for a 3.x/3x00. My TGP with the big 245 tires can downshift, hit boost past 3500 and still spin the tires in 1st gear.

yes i realize i was just hopefully not hit full boost till then but i doubt it.i got a heavy cam too .so i am sure wheel spin will be alot no matter what.
