  • turbo for a 3.1

i was thinking about boosting my 3.1
i have heard that a turbo is the best method
what kind of turbo would be the best for the job
the turbo grand prixs had a T 65 dont they
is that the one i would want to get or is there something else that would serve the purpose better
    I Like V660s

    RE: turbo for a 3.1

    tgp's have a T25.

contact RebelGT if he is around, he has a whole TGP setup for sale.

I am attempting to turbo my 3.1 with a '86-'86 grand national turbo. I hear people complain the T25 is too small

you need tomove a lot of air. maybe a turbo from a turbo diesil truck (make fun of me for that one, you know you want to...), but the exhaust side is probably too big, like blowing into a cave. the late 80's early 90's supra's had a 3.0 with turbo as an option it was dohc so its probably an ok match, but oem turbos are almost always undersized, so if you want the cheapest route, probably find a turbo from the biggest production turbo motor in a junkyard.

but as others stated elswhere, the size depends on what you want/looking for. high boost levels mean lots of $$$ to do it right, but under that its been done cheaply.

supra ct-26 could prolly scrape by, as could the tgp t25, I'm not sure how they size compared to each other, but it'll be instant boost with either one more than likely

The T25 is fine for stock TGP boost/power levels. It spools instantly, and doesn't have any problem supporting the stock boost levels. However, it maxes out right about where a chip puts you. Really, if you want to go faster than low 14's you need to go with something bigger.

i'll probably get poked at for this one. but i think its valid.

ive looked everywhere for crap for my ls1.and even the ones that run 10.5:cr have supercharger kits for 5-6psi, and some whack turbo company says 9psi. is there anyway a hybrid could go a similar route? like 10:1@6psi, or even 8psi. i know there is a lot of work involed in preperation. but it does pass the time, having something to do...
Tunning cant be that bad, a boost retard module and fmu. just more retard than a dropped cr, and a little richer to keep it cool, i guess an air/water IC would be a must as well.

Well, it would be pretty simple to have ~9.4:1 compression, you just have to switch to the iron head gaskets, they are thinner and bump the compression ratio up ~.5:1. With a smaller turbo that is pretty much maxed out, this might do you some good because it could gain you a little power that the turbo isn't producing, but with a decent sized turbo, you want lower compression and high boost. I thought about switching to the iron head gaskets, but decided not to due to my cam and 1.6 rockers, I didn't want to have valves smacking pistons, and at the time I planned on upgrading the turbo anyways.

ive got the 260 cam as wel, and the 1.6 rockers. we'll see if the valves smack the 3.1 iron head pistons. that would piss me off. everytime i turn the engine over i listen for anything and i hear nothing, but the lifters arent pressurized yet. if there is devestaion in the motor, i'll get late model pistons and some thiner gaskets. or maybe try to deepen the dish myself, find a awat to spin them up and put a smaller dish in the middle or somthing, try to find 10:1. i dont depend on this car daily, its my toy.
