  • This may sound redundant..

But I am looking to turbo my 2.8.
    It is from a 1989 z24 w/5spd.
I was told this has the Iron heads (HO heads from what I understand), and I should keep them. I have no idea, actually. Maybe you guys could tell me if I do have the iron heads.
Exhaust manifold and custom piping is easy. I can fabricate that, It will just take some work and reading.
I have a couple of questions for you:
    1. What are the factory injectors rated at, and could they handle boost? Also include fuel pump.
    2. What are the major problem areas for the 2.8 in 1989? I would like to know, so I know what to look for.
    3. Since this ECU is equipped with a knock retard, it lightens the danger load on me a little. My question is this : Would I have to run aftermarket Coils or are the stock ones fine in a boost setting?
    4. Transmissions. From what I have read, my year comes with either the Isuzu or the Getrag. Which is stronger, and will be able to handle(atleast for a while) 250-300 hp? I have heard the Getrag is better.
    5. Bottom end. I know the comp. ratio is already 8.9:1, and I would like to know how much the factory internals can handle (HP wise, to make it simple). Pistons/rods.

I am basically jumping in head first into this car. The engine is already out, I am just looking for guidance.
Also, there is no way that I could obtain a TGP motor here. They are just too rare.

What I am asking is for you (the people who know) to help me identify the questions I asked and tell me the problem areas with the 2.8/3.1 MPFI and transmission.

    Thanks alot,
    Rob

well, they stopped using the gen 1 motor (ironhead) in 86, and 87+ has the gen 2 aluminum head. if it says 2.8l on the intake, its dffinitly a gen 2 aluminum head

1)they are 16lb/h. yes they can handle a low boost setup.
2)the same as all gen 1 and 2 motors, the oiling. its not bad, but with boost, id be looking at a high volume oil pump.
3)no stock ignition will work fine. although, the knock sensor isnt any concern, its the map sensor. you need to get a 2 bar map for boost, and have a custom prom burned to read it properly, otherwise you will get a constant CEL
4)only the 4 cyl cars got the izusu tranny, all v6 cars got the getrag. it should be able to handle the boost.
5)the tgp was the same internals, and they ran just fine with boost, but they were tuned for it. id say for up to 12lbs, it will be safe.

the tgp put out about 205hp at 8lbs boost. if you are looking for 250-300hp, you are going to do some serious drivline and engine upgrades, as well as suspention and braking, cause the stock j-body stuff just isnt gonna take it.

have a look at www.turboz24.com this is the page of one of the first turbo-ed v6 j bodies, and he is running in the 11s.
