Holset turbos and the 3400 (Forcedfirebird?)

Looking around here locally and I have found that a lot of diesel guys are upgrading their turbos on cummins and powerstrokes and such. This means there are many cheap Holset turbos around here for very cheap.
I was curious which model of Holset would fit nicely on my 3400 hybrid engine in a low boost application(stock bottom-end)? John, I know you have some experience with them. I am thinking about a cheap boost build. I would like low-end power. Good for pulling out of corners, autoxing, etc. Looking for acceleration, not speed. Somerthing fun on the twisty roads. I want to keep the bottom end stock for now. I'll mabey add forged guts and a cam down the road.

Have 3500 heads and LIM waiting to go on when I add boost

To run that turbo under the conditions you're seeking, you're better off with a auto trans and a custom stall tq converter

use a different turbo. One that doesn't weigh 60 lbs. Use a garret, or a precision.

I hope your kidding? First off, the whole idea is CHEAP BOOST, do you have any idea what it cost to have an auto tranny proffesionally built? Nevermind the converter. Oh, and the auto add close to another 100 pounds of weight. Plus, I would rather shoot my own foot then drive an auto.

Either you guys didn't read the post or mabey I'm not explaining myself well enough.
First of all, the turbos are very cheap, like $100/$200 for a perfectly good turbo with under a hundered thousand Km's.
Second, there are many versions of the Holset turbos out there. And they don't all weigh sixty pounds. I'm looking for someone with experience with them, and can say wich version would work best for the 3400 I have. Specs are hard to find for them.
I don't want to buy a new turbo, they are out of my buget. There are new "Ebay" Godspeed knockoffs for cheap, but the Holsets are far more reliable. Also, I DO NOT drag race the car. I drive it on roads, and autocross. It is a sports car. I have built the car on a budget, one peice at a time, I intend to improve the engine that way as well.

I don't spool up until about 2750rpms and my target boost hits at around 3400rpms. I have an aggressive timing curve and run 110 fuel.

I'm also running an auto and a custom converter.

Good luck using that turbo effectively and efficiently with a manual

I'm surprised you aren't happy with it. With a 2.5l engine, the GRM car has full boost around 3k (shifting at 6800) and made 357whp@15psi. The 3500 is a larger, better flowing engine, the HX35 should be on the small side for it, compared to one on a 2.5l. Do you have it set up for twin scroll?

The Holset really doesn't like low boost, stock configuration in the trucks is a very high level of boost - IIRC the internal gate is set to 30psi. They are much more efficient at 15+psi and are good for about 500hp on a petrol engine. I have used them on a couple of builds (all 2.5l engines, though, none on 660's) and like the performance for the dollar.

I don't think they weigh 60lbs, we have a couple here, will try to find a minute to weigh one.

I didn't want it coming on aggressive and I wanted to create least torque down low. I was finding tq increasing a lot and with fwd that just is useless.
