  • 3400 amd nitrous

I am in the process of swapping a 2005 3400 into a 87 fiero GT. The engine only has a few thousand miles on it so it is mechanically sound. I have been reading about adding nitrous and have already decided I will go with a wet kit. I have a copy of HP tuners so tuning the engine should not be an issue.
    Questions
With HP tuners can I somehow have the spark timming retard when I am spraying
Having a very mechanically sound engine what sort of power shots could I spray? I will have a wideband O2 sensor and will have a fuel pressure sensor so I can log the pressure with HP tuners

Where is the fogger normally plumbed into the intake track?

I am not sure HPT can help with switching to another spark map with the flip of a switch. I would use OBD1, and get the 2 timer from moates to have a normal tune, and a nitrous tune. 150 with fuel and spark proper should be fine. I have no experience with nitrous, but the tune is going to be the only factor since we know a turbo 3500 will do more than 350 hp without any issues.

The question about timing with nitrous and HPTuners has been asked many times over on the HPTuners forum. There probably is a way to do it, but I have no idea what it is. I would recommend going over there and searching. With OBD2, you're limited to whatever HPTuners feels like supporting on your OS (which for V6 engines, isn't much).

I've been runing nitrous since 05 at least... and haven't lost a motor to it yet. Most issues I've had is slight headgasket seeping... and that I would have to equate to using the FelPro standard duty cheap head gaskets. I have yet to have an issue running the GM graphite ones paired with the ARP head studs.

I've hit my stock 3400 with a 100 shot and never had any issues with it either. I ran 2 steps colder on the plugs but didnt retard my timing... You need to uderstand you ONLY need to do that if you have your timing table already to the MAX where if you add 1 more degree of timing you will get KR... For a stock tune its not at that point... You could add at least 3-5 degrees of timing to a stock table before you would see any KR at WOT. So if you spend the time tuning for N/A and max your timing table then yes you should make a second tune with a table retarded 1-2 degrees and just take the 90sec's and flash the car before you run it at the strip... honestly NO need to convert to OBDI if you have the OBDII setup ready to go already and own the tuning hardware necessary to do so.

With my new build, more geared towards nitrous use I've been using the TCE TB spacer and putting my fogger there, in previous setups I've run it 6" before the TB butterfly in the intake tube... when it was OBDII that has to be AFTER the maf sensor. I can't stress that enough because if you spray pre MAF you'll freeze the sensors and they will go nuts and think your taking in WAY more air than you are.

But FWIW I still have a 100% stock bottom end, Only changes are Clevite rod and main bearings and a crank scraper, Pistons rings and rods are all factory and haven't been touched, hell I've never balanced the lower assy either and I think that would benefit me in the long run since I hit 6700 RPM on a regular basis with my setup.

I'm tempted to find 125 or 150hp setup and see what my car would do, but I need to get traction with this setup first before inducing MORE power... LOL
