hi i have a 96 monte carlo z34 and i have decided im gonna start saving up money to turbo it. i was wondering if anyone on here could help me out with what i need to do. and what i need since im gonna be buying the pieces seperately not as a kit. also would i need to build the motor or trans? i know ill need bigger injectors and a tuner, but would i need to rebuild my engine? i dont plan on putting a ton of boost to it. maybe enough to make 300 whp. thanks guys

TimG and myself are both running Turboed '95 Z34's. I believe your '96 will work just the same as our setups... the '96-7 heads are different but i think you can still do it like we did. Buy a 2nd stock Front log manifold, flip it over and bolt it to the rear... The '96-7 heads are a pill shaped port so it should bolt right up. then have a custom X-over made (no one offers a pre-made one), place the turbo and have a custom downpipe made. thats the hard part. Once's that is done you need to run a oil feed (oil pressure sensor) and an oil return (Dumps back to the pan). the Wastegate will run off either the front of the X-over and i would have it dump down between the trans and the radiator (this is how mine is setup). You can run intercooled or non if your low boost. I can program your ECU if you get 42.5# injectors (ZZPerformance.com) and send it to me.
Look threw my Garage pics you will see how alot of it is setup. Im running Stock Engine ~157,000 miles (never opened) on 7psi. my trans lasted untill 147,000 miles and let go. so if they are in good working order you won't need to touch them. 7psi i put down 331hp ~355TQ.
Hope this helps... the hard part is building the X-over and Downpipe. once that is done it gets easy.

thanks. there arent that many ppl out there who realize the potential of the z34's, everyone swaps the motors for 3.8's or put the 3.4 in a fiero. i know this is a dumb question to ask bc eveything is different but how much did you set up cost? since me and my gf are gonna be saving up for it.

96-97 are unfortunately a bit of a pain to turbo. The stock log manifolds aren't swappable front to back like the 91-95 motors. I had the flange cut off a stock front manifold and a new one welded on to fit the rear head. That's one way to go, another is to have a new rear manifold fabricated. Either way requires good machining and welding.
If you need any more detailed advice, PM me and I'll give you a call (or you can call me) to talk about it. I've posted a ton of information on here and mymonte, but sometimes it's just easier to talk with someone.

so how much do you think this is gonna cost? i dont wanna buy cheap parts and wind up having to replace my engine. i've had estimates ranging from 1500 to 4 grand. and what size turbo should i use? ive never really built a motor. na or boosted. i figured i would have to get someone to fabricate my x-over pipe and all the piping from the turbo. should i use an intercooler if i dont plan to make tons of boost?

my setup all finished and done cost me about $3K. Name brand parts. If you know a good machineist you could make adaptors between the manifolds and the heads for the rear and run stock logs.... I would have to see the differnece between the front and rear on the '96 heads. it all depends on what kind of power your trying to make and what not will determine what turbo you wanna run. some guys run a large T3/T4 others (timg and myself) run a T4 (t04E-60). Low boost (~5psi) you should be fine without an intercooler but if its in the budget i would run one.
Another option to investigate.... Run the WG off the outlet for the DP and modify the stock X-over... Onlything you will need to check is if you can still fit a downpipe threw and out of that area with the stock rear manifold installed.

i ran my stock trans untill it let loose at 147,000 miles. then i built my stock trans. the 4t60-e is a good trans and its not worth the hassle of swapping in a 65-e HD unless you are making big power (400+ Whp). im making 331hp on my 60-e trans.

okso i can just strengthen my stock one and it will hold the power i wanna make? also, hows the drivability with the turbo? also how do you think my car would act at the drag strip? like would i need to spool up the turbo to launch it or what? and are there any drawbacks to having a turbo monte?

I'm gonna follow this thread. I just picked up a 92 5 speed GTP and would love to turbo it at some point. Tim, haven't heard of you in forever! I used to have a 3.4 cutty vert, but it had too many little things wrong for it to ever be nice or worth turboing\"If it\'s not fast, make it look stupid!\"

your trans stock will hold 300WHP as long as its not slippn or wore out already. I have all the updated parts, hardened reaction shell and Raybestos clutches, large trans cooler and fresh fluid every 30K miles. it drives just like stock just alot faster from 3200 rpms on up. i also have a 3000 stall TQ converter so i can launch just fine at the track. even with my stock converter i could make like 1psi power braking it before the tree lights would drop, with the larger stall converter it spools and makes 3-5psi depending on how hard i stall it up. anytime you add a turbo, you will stress the engine/trans more and you will have to be prepaired to fix things if/when they break.

well since my original plan was to save up a little over 5k, im more than likely gonna rebuild my stock trans with stronger parts. i dont plan on driving it as hard as possible all the time. i just want something unique that can embarass some camaros and mustangs around where i live. im making a list of everything im gonna need, could you help me out? i need to know all the things im gonna need for the turbo and the trans. and if it can go in the budget ill probably tweak the motor a lil. this is gonna take a pretty long time to save up but im determined to do it.
