  • An Idea For No_Doz, Courtesy of Car Craft...

just got my newest issue of CC, going through it, saw the regular stuff, then i got near the back, page 86 if anyone else has it, and i saw this.

"since the action didn't count toward the season's points total, william modified his '93 grand am with more than the class rules would allow by dropping a supercharger on top of his 3100 V6. knowing a thing or two about these engines, we stopped for a closer look. these never came supercharged from the factory. william told us he took the blower from a 3.8L bonneville, cut a hole in the top of an extra manifold he had, and put the two together with a thick layer of RTV silicone in between. "i had to let this sit for four days to cure. when i tried it before, i only let it sit for two days and the pressure in the manifold blew the silicone out. this one works great so far though.""

according to the caption above it, he's pushing 9psi...

sorry for the bad pic, but my scanner hasn't worked in quite some time... it is without a doubt a large port manifold.

i can't believe silicone will hold the 9psi.

    NO_DOZ, i found you a cheap solution...

i'm also stoked that CC finally has a 60* motor in it, maybe there will be more to come?

It's bolted down and just sealed with silicone right? I could see that happening as long as it adheres well.

thats the thing, i can only see 2 possible spots holding it down, which looks like a bracket coming off of the left side of the driver's motor mount

and then between the runners for cylinders 4 and 6 it looks like a long bolt was passed through the flange of the UIM and a nut holding down the blower.

i'd like to see the whole thing, it sounds like a ghetto-cheap blower setup.

i don't know if the m90 case is aluminum or iron, but if its aluminum, it shouldn't be too tough to find a skilled TIG welder to permanately attach it to the UIM... about the only two things that might make this not such a great idea:
          1. you would need to line the blower up PERFECTLY or you'll eat the belt quickly.
          2. i don't know how tall the whole setup would be, but judging by the fact that the GA doesn't have a hood, i imagine you would need to go old-school and do the street machine thing and cut a hole in the hood the shape of the blower, maybe with a hood scoop mounted to keep rain off or something similar.

i like blowers sticking out of the hood, but i'll have to think about this more, get a better feel as to what else could go wrong...

lol yea i saw that a long time ago, its badass as hell but if i go s/c ill make or custom fab an intake that will keep that monster within a 3-4" cowl so i can cover it up.

they screwed up so much in that article.

first they say it comes from a GTP then it comes from a Bonneville. and thats definately not a Grand am they never came with those types of engine mounts with the 3x00 combo.

its a cool idea nonetheless. that beretta is awesome was my fav for many years.

The 93 GA's had the boat anchor's little brother, the 3300. It's probably a grandprix.

Maybe i'm the only one but I have never liked the idea of attaching an m90 to the top of any 60* engine.

it would make a rather tall engine taller, but i love blower through the hood street machines... maybe i'm weird

i think its about as bad ass as you're gonna get, its just being fwd & having a horizontal hole in your hood doesnt look too stock... :P

McGavin's was an impressive mechanical setup, but lacked greatly in the actually running of the vehicle... he attempted this on an OBD1.5 system and never actually ended up tuning the setup to run properly. IIRC he never got the times he should have with this setup and the car has since been parted out and scrapped. It was definitely a good start, but I think the project was never properly completed or ever completed.
