  • I need TGP help badly

Just bought the car with a bad trans. Replaced it with a junkyard 4t60. (I know the trans is only gonna last about a week with that motor... I know) When reassembling, everything went great!

1990 ASC Mclaren Turbo Grand Prix. Finishing install of new transmission.

I had a clamp that was loose by the starter, so I went to tighten it and shorted off the starter. After replacing a blown fuse I took it for a spin and got no boost, maybe 2lbs:

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

I have since then replaced the oil sending unit, plugs, wires, double checked all the vacuum lines (except under the uim), and charge pipes.
Im still getting no boost. The car runs like junk too. In the first video she purred like a kitten. Now it shakes and when your barely on the throttle you can feel the power coming in and out.

    Ive been on TGPforums

i'm sure you have your reasons, but i remember reading something similar to this recently there... it might have ended up being the knock sensor???

and don't forget, there are a lot of w-body members on here as well.

            Need more info:
            1) Did you have any trouble getting over 2psi before tranny was replaced?
            2) Have you been able to get over 2 psi since you put the engine/trans back in?
            3) Are there any error codes being thrown?

I saw from your post on TGP forums that you're having other electrical problems.

I suspect that bad grounds are to blame. Unless you took the time to clean them thoroughly when reinstalling, you may not be getting contact. There are two sets of grounds on the engine/trans bolts and then on the back of the block that ground the ECM.

I suspect the reason that you aren't getting boost is that the waste gate solenoid remains open until grounded through the ECM. If you have bad grounds, ECM doesn't have a good ground waste gate solenoid does not close, and the waste gate opens at the pressure of the spring ~2psi.

I've "heard" that bad grounds can make the car run poorly. I believe in my car it was the reason for throwing code 33.

TGPforums can be a good source of information for TGP specific answers, as I don't believe there are many people here with TGPs.

              1. No all the way up to 8ish
              2. No. The video is the first drive after reinstall
              3. I don't know about codes, but I do not have an ses light

The two grounds for the ecm i remember reconnecting. I put them both on the same bolt (they were on two different ones during disassembly). Should I get back there and seperate them?

              Thanks

you may have just answered your own question: EFI vehicles are very touchy about how they are grounded, so moving the grounds back to the proper place might fix your issue

Did the engine stay in the car, or did it come out with the trans?

Electrically, if it's a good connection, the wire shouldn't care where it is, but personally, I would take them off. Clean the crap out of them and the bolts they're connected to and put them how they were originally.

I have 2 sets of grounds on the back of my engine near the intermediate shaft support; I believe TGPs are the same. If you pulled your engine, make sure you clean those too.

                    PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

I disconnected the wastegate and made lots of boost.

So I removed the boost controller, took it apart and put it back together. Now it works!
                    I consistently get 8psi!

                    Thanks Everybody for your help!

so i'm guessing that it thought it was making too much boost and opened itself up. so a stuck spring/diaphragm, or something to that accord

Sounds more like he had the vacuum lines backwards on the boost controller. That will cause this problem.

I remember that feeling the first time we put a JeffM chip in our TGP. It'll be interesting to see how a stock engine feels with a much bigger than stock turbo. SO afraid of blowing it up though. Engine we bought it for was a lot stronger than stock
