  • Help identifying a turbo

I am hoping someone can help me identify this turbo. It is supposed to be a Garret but where the name is supposed to be is ground off. If this is a Garret would it be decent for a 3.1/3400 Hybrid on about 8psi. These are the specs he has for it:

    T3/T4 Turbo .57 trim compressor
    .63 a/r exhaust
    Oil cooled w/ actuator
This has never been used and has no shaft play

Why would they grind the Garrett label off?

It looks to me like the ebay copy with the m12 cast in the compressor case. IT's actually a 46 trim and will boost nice and early on a 3.1/3400

I used one on my car, and am now building a kit to use 2.

Yeah it definately looks like it has an m12 cast in it. Do you know what brand it might be? How much do you think it is worth? Thanks, I couldn't figure why they would grind the Garrett off either that is why I didn't believe the story.

there's nothing wrong with the newer ebay turbos. theyre actually balanced decently. the old ones destroyed themselves quickly due to improper balancing, or not being balanced at all. ive installed MANY ebay turbos on friends cars and havent had an issue. besides minor shaft play is normal with out the hydrodynamic wedge of oil in the bearings..

ive run the same turbo for close to 3 years now from 6psi all the way up over 20 and its still going strong.ff is also using 2 of them on his new motor,if u use it just be sure u have the proper oil feed setup and oil return setup

the only turbos on ebay id really worry about now are the gt35r ( ball bearing) they fail 9 out of 10 times, though the ebay gt35 journal bearing seems to fair as well as the rest

and also the ssautochrome t3 units seem to have some issues as well

Thanks guys, I have been reading on alot of forums about the ebay turbos being better now and that is what I am going to do. This one was supposed to be a brand new Garrett that I could get for about $200. But obviously it wasnt. Now to decide which one and what size. Thanks again.

t04e works good for early boost. They are $177 delivered from just-intercoolers ebay store.

One more question for you guys. These ebay turbo's, specifically the ones from just-intercoolers, what do you guys think about the internal wastegates? Alot of people don't seem to trust them and I just wanted to get some opinions from people who have run them.

Internal wastegates aren't bad, but are typically found on smaller turbos. They can lead to boost creep if they're not big enough. On the right application, they work very well though.

Most of your OEM turboed cars run internal wastegates... IE. Saab, Volvo, Mitsubishi, Subaru, GM, Ford, ect... there are a few rare cars out there that run external gates.. if it was not reliable they wouldn't use them as oem equipment. External gates are more precise and are easier to use on custom application.
