  • Is this intercooler any good?

Hi, i am looking to buy the intercooler for my 3.4L DOHC project, i am hoping for 400WHP and i am wondering if you guys think this intercooler is any good? should i go with a air to water intercooler? will using coolant from the engine really cool the air down? any advice would be great! I have no problem spending more on an intercooler if need be, just let me know.

    Thanks

    Jake

actually i kinda like this one too, just worried about it fitting in the car and not blocking the rad and condeser to much.

Don't use the engine coolant to cool a water-to-air I/C. A water I/C needs it's own cool water supply, such as ice water in a reservoir.

I always thought it would be interesting to make a freon-to-air I/C, though.

EDIT: That water to air doesn't even need to be at the front of the car. Many drag cars have them mounted where the front pass seat used to be.

ok, i had just read somewhere that you use engine coolant, so should i not go with a air to water then? this is an everyday driver so i cant use ice water. ive always thought about a freeon cooled I/C too, but its not happening on this one ,lol even though my A/C works mint.

Air to air is fine. There are plenty of 1000hp cars with air to air.

And it's OK to put in front of your radiator.

i know that the air to air will work, and can handle lots of power, but im looking for the most efficient one, so i can make the most power with the least amount of boost. i dont want to crank the boost up in my motor, i want to try and get lots of HP more safely.

then go for a constant co2 or dry ice system........ seriously, you have to think about not only efficiency, but also weather or not it will work on the street

oh, and engine coolant to coold the charged air is just stupid....n/a my temps stay 10 degrees max over outside temps, boosted you shouldn't get over 200 degress unless its 100+ outside, if you are i would check back over the plumbing and wrap the hot side and any charge pipes that might be in a warm area with reflective heat shield....

Where you live, using antifreeze is necessary for an air-water setup. Pure water would work better but once it gets below freezing something in the loop will go pop.

putting in a AIR to AIR wont effect engine cooling much..i have one in front of mine and the coolant stays where it was NA. My intake temps when cruising i see around 70-75* driving around 80mph on a 65-70*night

Yeah i actually wasnt worried about putting an air to air infront of the rad, i mean the condeser is already there , i was just worried about the water to air because there is no fins for the air to go through. anyways ive decided to stay away from water to air since i dont have the room for extra water containers and pumps and stuff. so im looking at this intercooler.

let me know what you guys think, i dont know much about this stuff and i respect your opinions.

                    thanks

good to know, ill probably order it tommorow then. does it really seem to cool the air good?

                        thanks

yeah, but im willing to bet its going to go for more than a grand, it still has 6 days left on it, and i kinda wanted one with the inlet and outlet on the same side, thanks for looking though, i appreciate it.

                              Same side eh ?

I'd go for a real Spearco core... The "cheap" intercoolers just seem too good to be true... Maybe they are OK, but I dunno...
