Its a brand new turbo. I did seat the rings b revving the motor for a good 10 min when first starting it. I need to take it easy on the motor as it only has 220 miles on it now. i doubt its the motor, but if it is I dont know what I will do. Whats the max rpm I should reach when driving. I have only gotten to 4,500 and then stopped and only made 2 psi of boost.

So what kind of driving should I do? Highway? I only made 2 psi of boost thats not that much. You have me scared thinking that I blew my motor up already. I guess I will keep it under 3000 rpm for like a 1000 miles or so and put that restrictor on the turbo. What else can I do, do I still have time to fix this with easy driving.

the proper way to break in a motor is hotly debated, however i like to run it at 2000rpm for 15 minutes initialy. then drive it easy, light throttle, the most important thing being to varry the rpm. if your highway driving, every so often drop a gear so the rpm picks up, drive for a couple minutes, then shift back. after 100miles, change the oil, and after 1000km, change it again and your good to start driving it hard, within moderation. i wouldnt be driving it like ya stole it till you have put on 3000 miles, but after 1000 miles you can full throttle and run up to redline.

Just got back from my 120 mile crusin trip. I went on the highway and got it to 3hg mercury and then let off the gas and the vac gauge shot up to 20 hg. This is how I did the other engine. When I came to a light I put it in N and revved it around 1800-2200 and never let it idle. Half way through the trip I let the car idle for about 2 sec and got a little smoke, and just did it now at the end and no smoke. I hope I fix it. I will not go past 3000 rpm until 3000 miles are on the motor and I will not let it ldle. I am going to do the reducer and see what kind of reading I get. If its too low I will take it off. Other than that it ran very smooth. I cant believe I was stupid enough to get on the car with 150 miles on it. AHH, I hope I can still brake it in.

its actualy good to get the rpm over 4000, just dont be heavy on the throttle when doing it (light throttle is fine) and dont do it for long periods of time. the key is low engine load. also you dont have to keep the rpm up when you come to a stop. the key is not to let it sit and idle for a long time. if you pull up to a light, you can let it idle for 30 seconds, not gonna cause an issue. if its a long light, pop it in neutral and rev it up a couple times lightly. once you hit 1000 miles, your good to drive it like you normaly would, just dont go beating the living hell out of it (aka dont go to the track and race), however short full throttle pulls up to redline are fine, wont do any hard, just dont go full throttleing it from every light or stop sign.

Yeah it was only once that I did that. So you think that my motor is saveable?

Make sure your air inlet plumbing from the filter back is not restrictive and that you have good flow from the oil drain back to the engine . From your description it doesn't sound like the problem is to much oil flow, I've had that problem before and oil usually gets dumped into the turbine where it smokes for much longer than a few seconds and much, much more than a little puff.
If you have a good bit of oil inside the compressor housing and the above mentioned is in order I would be concerned about the condition of the turbo and the possibility something may have found its way into the plumbing and through the blades. I'm having to clean out my pipes before install due to all of the metal tags resulting from cutting the pipe, and lengths of welding wire at burn through points hanging onto the inside of the pipe at a few weld joints.

There was not much oil in the compressor side of the turbo. It has like a film of oil. I am going to move the drain line today and see if that helps. But I do have one question. When I am at close to making boost the turbo makes a swoosh sound. Sort of like a BOV but its not, because I am not making boost. What is that noise.

Took it for another easy drive. Gave it gas and let off, gave it gas and let off. it does not smoke at idle, I ;et it idle for about 3 sec. The only thing is that it gave a small puff when taking off. I think that this was 90% of the problem. The drain line and the feed line both need to be fixed and it should be good to go. The guy at the turbo shop told me that it was compressor surge, basically the air going backwards. It seems to be running better, just hope it stops smoking

Ok, just a little update. The car now does not smoke at startup. I drove into work today and it never burned any oil. Until I parked the car a work it just smoked a little. I am thining its the turbo. I am going to keep driving the car, but wont make any assumptions until I fix the drain line and put the restrictor on. I guess in a couple hundered miles I should be able to tell though
