  • Compare the two supercharger kits

Can someone please go into a bit of detail and explain the pro's and cons of the two different supercharger kits available.

The first being the RSM vortech blower. I've read its prone to fail, but can be corrected with new bearings and shit.

The second being the eaton blower that gm put out.

So which one makes more power on our engines when running at 8psi? Which one is more reliable? Which one is the easiest to install? Which one is the easiest to upgrade down the road?

    Thanks

Both will produce the same amount of power at 8psi. The way they produce boost throughout the RPM range is different though.

The EM blower will produce boost the soonest and will climb at a steady rate with rpm. Imagine a straight line on a graph going up with rpm. This allows them to produce the most overall power. The downside with roots blowers is that they're limited to about ~12 psi before their efficiency goes out the window. They also the run the hottest and the M62 from the GM kit is barely enough to cover the 3400 at it's peak RPM. It's ok for mild modification on a daily driver but an M90 setup is better for a more serious build. Most OEM supercharged cars use eaton SC's so their reliability is already proven.

Centrifugal blowers like the RSM Vortech kit will only produce boost at mid-high rpm and the boost increases exponentially with rpm until peak is reached. This can be visualized as a rising parabolic curve on a graph. These SC's can push 20+ psi if geared right, run cooler, and have an easier time being intercooled. They are a little less reliable than a roots setup and are usually a lot noisier, which some people like.

The RSM kit is probably the hardest to install as it requires oil lines to be added to the engine's oiling system. You'll also have to do a battery relocation if you don't want to use their small battery. PCM tuning is a must for both. Doubly so with RSM's kit as they don't seem to give a damn about it.

Is it possible to swap out the guts of a m90 into the housing of a m62?

Thank you for your explanation above, it was useful info.

No. The M90 is significantly larger than the M62 and most likely no components will switch between the 2.

I guess you can't swap out the m90 for the m62 very easily either?

Unfortunately no. The inlet and outlet ports are different sizes and require hardware specific to each. You can see just how different they are here: http://www.magnusonproducts.com/models.htm

GM didn't. Magnuson did. Not sure where feavs got that GM put it out. If they had, there probably would have been more than a dozen made.

All I know is that GM had the kits made for a concept Grand Am. But, like the majority of their concepts, they axed it and sold the aftermarket stuff to recoup some of the cost.

If you're patient enough you can get one. One just sold on the buy, sell, trade section of our site earlier in the month. The best place to keep an eye on is the For Sale sections at www.grandamgt.com. Every now and then one will pop up when someone de-mods their car.

The Vortech should make more peak power, but will only make full boost at redline. The roots style Eaton blowers are very reliable and make full boost very early in the RPM range, but are not nearly as efficient. Upgrades for both will be scarce. Since I believe that both are discontinued, run whatever you can find or just go turbo. If you think upgrades are likely, then a turbo is your best bet.
