  • TurboZ24 is still boosted, but not as it was....

    Well, I basically finished the downgrade of my car. I'm much happier with it now, easy to drive, finish the tune next weekend and pass emissions, etc. It's just way easier to drive and it's back to daily driver status.

    From 310 wheel HP @ 7 psi, 430 wheel at 16 psi to maybe 230@6 psi and a max of 280 at 10-12 psi.

    The sad thing is that the 30 lb injectors are using almost an identical fuel map to the 55's that were on the previous engine.

    Don't worry, the previous engine is stored, waiting on it's additional improvements and it's new body.

          Well, sad in the sense that the old motor uses 2x the fuel that the replacement uses. It's not "sad", but it's interesting to me. I never realized it used that much fuel. I do know that cruising it got excellent mileage (around 30), but on the gas, it ate up the fuel, probably 8 mpg.

            That doesn't make sense, are the injectors rated at the same psi? The 3100 up has a rail pressure of ~56psi the 3.4L, 3.1L and below was around 42psi so for example a 22lb/hr injector from a 3100 would not flow 22lb/hr on a 3.1L and from what I have seen in the ratings the engine specific injector is usually rated for the same pressure the regulator is set for on its application.

            I've read a lot of feed back on different installs as well as noted results on what I have experienced with my own and the best injectors I've found are as close to the minimum requirement as you can get them, run at a higher pressure. The aluminum heads are all around better than the cast in everything except strength and heat resistance. 55 lb/hr injectors sound like a bit much,

            With a BSFC of .55 I calculate 486 hp for 55 lb/hr injectors rated at 42 psi with a 42 psi rail pressure and 554 hp at a rail pressure of 56psi. Since the larger injectors tend to be more difficult to control I would go with a smaller flow, higher pressure and a 90% duty cycle range since I don't race and would only run that kind of load for about 6sec, 36 lb/hr@ 65psi, 90%dc= 440hp

              Both engines run identical fuel pressure.

              My iron heads flow very well, they are worked over a lot. It obviously uses a lot more fuel, due to the differences in the HP ratings of the engines.

              Yes, it was a little more difficult to get the 55 lb injectors to run clean, but they are low impedence, so they do have a shorter minimum open time. They worked out fine except for idle, which didn't matter since the cam profile would never get it to legit pass emissions anyways. I will be swapping to even larger injectors when the engine goes full SFI (full, I mean from idle to redline, not like a lot of GM systems that are SFI only before XXXX rpm).

              I find it better to run stock factory fuel pressure, and just retune the ECM (I always use aftermarket ECM's with most of my project cars).

                  yep. I kept the main pipe that goes under the battery tray. That was on the old setup also. No reason to change it out.

                      There are several choices. The old Haltech E6A stayed with the Cavalier.

                      I was looking at either the Haltech E11, which allows for SFI + coil on plug ignition with ignition and fuel programs per cylinder. I Was also looking into the Motec. I will have to make a decision sooner or later, but I still need the TKO-600 for the car and the body kit I got for it needs to get installed also.

                              Maybe you should put your old motor into a Fiero. They are cheap, and easy to find. Plus they prolly weigh less than a cavalier, and have rwd.
