im lookin for some reletivley cheap upgrades for my sunbird 3.1L. I found a supplier online and emailed them they say that is moves 856 CFM.

Air Pressure : 1.256 PSI
Air Flow : 856 CFM
Power Consumption: 765 Watts
Spooling Rate : 27500 RPM
Size : 4"x4"x4"



thats a fair demand on the alternator. i think my car demands 330 CFM @ 6000rpm
i heard alot of bad news about them but no proof that they dont work.

personally me and my entire class of automotive techs, and our instructors think that those "electric superchargers" are full of crap, but they can produce results. to try and disporove them, we used a leaf blower on an 88 beretta, yah thats right the 2.8 60*v6, one of my friends owns it. so we took the intake piping and routed it to the front of the car, and taped up an electric leaf blower to it. i think the cfm on the blower was like 280 or so, so we used that, cuz it was all we had. so we hooked a vacuum gauge up to the manifold(intake press around here is like 15in hg i think) and it showed a in drop in vacuum, and about 1 lb of boost. that was at wide open throttle. the stock measurements were still about 4 to 6 in vacuum at WOT, and with the leaf blower there was no vacuum and about 1lb of boost.

so yah it could work, it could be worth the money, but i think that adding 30 hp?!? that sounds like fish oil.

i can tell u the butt dyno said it was a little quicker and felt like it had a little more power, but it just isnt that reliable. and its kind of a rediculous way to go, if you want good power, look at ported intakes, CAI, and exhaust, a cheap way for good top end it the electric cutout, itll help you up top and can be closed off to keep the cops happy.

i wouldnt buy one myself, but it was a neat project.

Those chargers are a joke man, most are $15 bilge pumps. They've been proven to do nothing but be a restriction in your intake. they will never flow enough air for a '660. They might work ok on a dirt bike or a lawn mower tho :P


Speed costs money, there are no cheap upgrades that will boost performance. Someone needs to post the CFM of a T04B turbo or even the T25 that came on the TGP.

If you wanna go fast, a gen3 swap is a fairly easy way to get into the low 14's. the mount is avaliable from www.jbodyperformance.com and you can talk to "Burn" on V6z24 about a chip to run a 3400 with the multech 2 injectors.

we were getting close to 200 HP at the wheels with internally stock 3400 swaps at the V6 bash

lol, shaun is generaly sarcastic about stupid things.

for all the time and trouble there are better ways to get boost. Your over all demands for power and when you get it dictate your mods. If you want to go this way consider swapping the blowers motor for a brushless motor and a way to drive it. Brushless electric motors are much more efficent and virtually zero maintanence, and more powerfull at the same time.

Just an off the wall thought, make a one of the kind hood coverd in solar cells to lessen the load from the blower.

ok u've convinced me not 2 get 1 and finding power is not cheap. but i think i am goin 2 replace a knockin pistion any power inproving ideas 4 when i rip apart my motor. it would be nice break 200hp that is about 60hp from stock. but my main reson is to make under the hood lik nicer i am goin 2 repaint the upper intake

you could use 3100 pistons if just doing a piston swap its a significant change in compression ratio. probaly be able to find those pistons on rods and the swap is even easier. you could use pistons from a 3.1 camaro motor and get even higher compression, generaly the higher the compression the more expensive gas you need. if your tearing down the motor there are cams on the market and flanges to make your own headers with. Tuning is important, otherwise stuff is just functioning and not working together for maximum power.

200hp isnt an unreasonable goal, the 3400 is a good place to start since its somewhere around 175-185hp to start with.

I was thinkin of gettin my heads machined down but i havent really thought of anythin else i might have some extra insurance money comin in from a total loss acident (hopefully $500 can towards performance,not to hard to fix myself) but how would changin the piston increase compresionr ratio? I wounder how much i could shave off the headed without having 2 pour in 89 octane or higher, gas prices gettin 2 high. But on the other hand i get more power and i think increased fuel mileage.
Would it balance out?

i saw a cold air on the site dave refered me to but is it worth it?
($300can for approx. 9hp)

it would be wise to get to know everything about motors and how changing things affects them.

Pistons are either flat, dished, or domed. the volume of a dish (+cc's) or dome (-cc's) in addition to the cc's from the head chamber and a few other variable all effect the compression ratio. stock pistons are dished, the 3100 pistons have a shallower dish, the 3.1 camaro piston dishes are shallower yet.

machining the heads will slightly bump the compression ratio, but there are other complications like port alignment and to do it right you need to remove material from the lower manifold to get a proper seal.

$500 can help out a bit, if you do things smartly. make your own CAI for much less than 300, a set of pistons can run for $1-200, a cam probly wont fit in that budget but its like $150-200. a custom chip would be a better choice.

Well I took a blower motor out if a heater and put a bonnet at the end of it, then when installed on my car it had made a 2 jet size diffrence how I know this is because I was still getting some pops and crackles out of the pipes with it turned off because of it being a little too rich, then with it On it leaned it to stoich which impressed me, and the electrical draw is no more than if u were to turn on ur heater

i've thought of getting an r/c car brusless setup and using that to operate a blower. they normaly run from 7.2 volts and some run dual packs for 14.4 so 12v shouldnt be a problem.

a properly designed electric supercharger would be pricey, probly more than a procharger head unit.

The ram air induction system used on the Pontiac Trans Am was good for a 25 hp increase when it debuted years ago on that car. Perhaps that would be a good place to start if you can devise a method of plumbing one up with a hood scoop or something beneath the bumper. I saw a picture of an earlier generation camaro that used something like cloths dryer ventilation tubing attached to the air dam underneath the car and directed up to the filter housing which on the early camaro had a "Y" configuration with two filters so the person used two tubes. That will certainly offer a performance gain if done right.
