99% of stock naturally aspirated motors can't handle "high levels of boost." I consider over 20 psi to be high levels of boost. The majority of the stock naturally aspirated motors on the market can do 5-10 psi on pump gas. I would imagine that the 3900 is no different.

If the 3900 is built like the 3100/3400's then it should handle 10 psi fairly reliably with good tuning. Any more than that and you're looking at internal engine work. Which would be difficult since the 3900 has nothing in the way of aftermarket.
Few people (if any? V6HO comes to mind but he's been MIA) here are working on cars with the newer 60*V6's yet so info on this subject is purely speculative.1995 Grand Am SE

I agree, watch all the signs. Too much boost, poor gas, leads to detonation.Detenation is the enemy, it has no mercy. Stock cast pistons on a good running engine will take 4-5 pounds of boost,(as long as all the safety factors are in place). Hypereutectic pistons will take maybe 8-10. Again, is it safe? Forged and forged crank, h-beam rods etc.....the way to go. Just takes money. In short, what will you get out of your engine..... exactly what you put in.

Well considering your starting with a forged steel crank and piston squirters, slap in some forged pistons and rods and you'd probably have yourself a pretty fearsome powerplant.98 camaro swapping in lz9 th400 setup

4.0L(after bore 3.917 and stroke 3.3485),carrillo sbc rods(narrowed),wiseco custom forged pistons 8.5:1 CR, TCE Double Roller timing chain, gen 3 cam, P&P heads, headers 1 3/4 primaries into 3-1 collector, and going to run ms2.

will the 3900 take 20psi? yes... for how long? maybe a half second, maybe an hour.... maybe it'll last until load is placed on it, the real thing here is what can you safely boost the engine to and have it last for your usage period between rebuilds, hell, some built import engines run 50+psi, but even though they're built your looking at a rebuild after every run, you have to set out goals for your application before you can go asking what a safe boost level is, if your looking for a daily driveable car i would look at a goal of 8psi max, high budget race engine? blow it up!! 15-20 psi fun runs all around and give it hell til it dies, lol
