  • Powder coating

I've got a few peices of ugly i want to be beautiful again. I know some of you have had powder coating done, i was really impressed with what my dad had done on his bike.

list what you had done, where it was done and for how much so i can pick a place or get a good reference point.

btw, i'm looking at having a pair of fiero valve covers and my 86 j-body plenum done.

    thanks in advance

Here is what I've done on mine so far.

I own a powder coating business here in northwest FL. I plan on doing the UIM and valve covers for $120.00 plus shipping for any forum members of the sites I'm a member. You can check out my site at Morris Powder Coating. It's under construction but I have a few pics in the gallery.

The ONLY thing that you would need to do with any part that you sent is just clean it. Spray it down with some Purple Power, or similar product, then spray it off. As long as you don't ship it dripping oil or dirt it's perfect.

for $120... go to sears and buy the craftsman powdercoating system for $80 and an old electric oven at a garage sale or off the side of the road. and you'll be able to do anything you need that can fit in a regular oven, and just pay for the powder. thats what i'm doing - just set up the old oven from the house.

I'm all for people that do things for themselves...heck that's how I got into this business. However, $120 is actually a discounted price for forum members...which is not a bad price at all. It will cost quite a bit more than that to get the right stuff to do your own.

not to be a dick, but don't forget to factor in shipping. I'd try and find someone local, face to face business is better anyway.

i'd need the valve covers media blasted first, they are old fiero parts and have the factory red coat on them still, well most of it anyways. the plenum i'll drop off at a the machinist for a dip in the hot tank.

If you are interested, PM me your shipping address and I'll get an estimate on those costs as well. While I agree...to a point...that being able to drop off a part and pick it locally is great...If you can save $$$ and still get high quality why not ship? I'd say that about 45% of my business is via the Internet. I ship the vast majority of my parts FedEx...they aren't near as expensive as you might think.

Out of pure curiosity, if nothing else, contact a local powder coater and get a quote. While my pricing surely can't beat everyone's, I know for a fact that I am consistently and incredibly less expensive than anyone within a 200 mile radius. I've checked around and so have many of my customers.

                    Thanks,
                    Kevin

^^^ He does very good work and is reputable. A few members on a local forum have used MPC.

$120 is a very good price. Plus no shipping is great. I may have to contact you in the near future.

BTW, Welcome to the site. I'm the guy that refered you on racingpensacola.com (CooleyZ24).

here are a few pics, cant really send them through PM's. the plenum is one of a kind specific to '86 MPFI j-bodies, no harm in showing that off even if its all stained looking. odds on finding another one of these is like getting hit by lightning twice.

pretty much just looking to "restore" the valve covers, and coating the plenum to match, red with raw fins. how much would a clear coat cost?

I don't typically charge for clears. So for those parts it wouldn't be an added cost. Also, estimating a weight of approx 30 pounds, the cost to ship these parts to me via FedEx is around $16.00.

                          Thanks,
                          Kevin
