  • 10 or 12 point Roll Cage

anyone know what would be the closest fit for a late N-body (alero), in a roll cage offered in a pre-made kit? Summit/Jegs both offer a wide variety of cages, but none for mine. I was thinking a Vega/Monza kit would probably be a closer fit than a camaro.....opinions?

*edited......oh yeah, mine's a 4-dr also, but I'm fitting it with swing-out door bars at all 4 doors.

um, why exactly do you need a cage in an alero??? what are you doing with this car???

check with the rules you are running. likley, you would need a 6 point cage at most. and you wouldnt need door bars in the rear, they arent required by any ruling i know of.

good point about the bars in the rear.

as far as rules, I believe a 10 point is required for 10.99 and quicker. I may be mistaken though.

I'll go ahead and tell you, it's a 3400/4t65 combo, which will be followed by lots of laughter, etc....but I'm not here to talk mad shit, I seriously want to give it an effort. If ZZP/Stattama can make 9's with their larger body Gran Prix 3800 TT, I think there's hope. And yeah, I know there's ALOT involved in doing it. Money, time, engineering, etc.

Sorry, I dont mean to sound cross, but I hear it all day long from people on other forums about what is not possible, etc....but that's not going to stop me from trying.

The H-body is very narrow compared to the N-body.

Best bet, contact some manufacturers and talk to thier tech guys, explain the car you have and see if they can match up something for you......

I can pretty much garuntee you'll be onto something custom though.

BTW guys, the pics I have seen of this Alero, look good, be nothing on my 'Bu when I'm done though, :P

yeah, I already had a quote for a locally built custom. Was going to run 700 bones and up. I just figured I could put the extra money into the transmission rather than waste it if there was a less expensive method. I have people all over the place that will weld for me, so I figured minor modification to a prebuilt kit would be more cost effective.

well, it realy depends on how much it needs to be changed. in the end, if there is to much that needs changing, it may end up costing more.

reason i asked you what you were doing with the car was cause there isnt to many people on forums that are trying to build 10 second fwd cars.

sorry sharkey. I was just bracing for the usual assault of "no-way" and "it will never happen", etc.

you make a good point of too much modifying and we're right back in the same boat as full custom. I did however find someone that's already done it, same N-body platform, but RWD converted (not just a body set on a A or F chassis). These guys make/sell the full front and rear subframe conversions. I think it's going to be the same interior specs though, so I shot them an email.

I forgot about your other question of what I'm doing with it.

So far turbo, "stage 3" heads/intakes (I hate using the term "stage") is all I have on hand. Tranny is going to be similar to ZZP's setup, but I may end up going more GM's sponsored 4t65 they have in the sunfire/cavalier, one runs 600hp, the other 1000hp. I wont be getting that dramatic though, they did stuff like 4th gear delete, and some other stuff I can do without.

Engine is staying stock bottom-end, getting cammed, double roller timing chain, and all-out on the top end this season, and going fully built bottom end over the coming winter for next season, with custom Ross pistons, modified Eagle H-beams, crank, etc.

That pic is from that guy just outside of Cayuga Ontario Canada, right?

Yeah his stuff is decent, but pricey and kinda dated. Also, it's not so much a conversion, but a whole new chassis stuffed under the N-body. Has to be, the chassis has to pass cert, and will not without basically being a whole new chassis.

where do you live, your best bet is to have on custom made.

already checked into that before this post, which is what led me this route to modding a kit.

out of 5 automotive related welding shops, 4 were too chickenshit to tackle a cage that needed certification, but would do it if it was just for show. The last one, quoted me $700 minimum, and upwards if it took more than what he expected. This is while looking at the car and having a good idea of what it would take.
