  • An odd discovery at a GM dealership

I went in to my local dealership to get some various stuff for spring maintenance and the remaining gaskets and sensors needed for a top-end swap. After I handed my list to the parts guy he tells me the part numbers I got from gmpartsdirect.com are no good. Apparantly, GM uses different part numbers in Canada than they do in the US.

Not sure if this was news to anyone but it sure caught me by surprise at how wasteful it is.

But anywho, if anyone can point me to someplace where I can find the right numbers it'd be much appreciated. If all else fails I can just get felpro gaskets and grab the sensors from a junkyard.

gm changes part numbers like i change boxers. in the last year the part number for gm syncromesh changes everytime i order it. at the last seminar i was at, the gm transmission guy told us exact names of updates, but wouldnt give us part numbers because they change to often.

doesnt surprise me that gm uses different numbers in canada than the USA.

Yeah it is more common for fluids/sealants/lubricants, etc, to have one part number for canada and one for the states but yeah there are a lot of pnc

Yup. Its stupid. I still do not know why they do this.

I know for some stuff on GMPD they list it with some letters infront of it when its a kit, such as the Wbody suspension upgrade part, The number GMPD lists is not a GM number.

Yeah the part number changes are rediculous, However it only takes putting the number into the GM access and it will give them the new PN and or change up.

What is GM access? I have a parts book for the lumina circa '92, and I can guarantee some of the shit in here is definatly out of date.

GM ACCESS was implemented in Jan 1998.

"For the dealer, GM ACCESS means quicker delivery of information, automatic updates to electronic manuals and bulletins, increased staff productivity due to timely delivery of information, and same-time delivery of information to all GM dealers."

The advantages of the new factory communications system to GM are equally obvious: every dealer gets the same applications at the same time, and GM can now broadcast information to all its dealers simultaneously rather than having to make 8,600 separate transmissions, as was the case with the old DCS system.
So its an all-in-one communications network. For everything, tech manual updates, bulletins, code numbers ETC...
