Depends on the 4 banger. There are some BAD ones out there.
But I love toasting one when I get the chance. I have not yet had my ass handed to me by one. Staging mishap. If you are driving a Chevy, everything else, is just a blur. 3.4 Carbon Footprint.

my buddy kicks my ass all the time. he has a 90 sunbird vert with a 2.0l turbo 5 speed. we put the tgp turbo on, bov, 2.5" exaust, msd coil and a couple other things. itll roast the tires through 2nd gear. 165hp stock, the tgp turbo is supposed to put it up to 200hp at stock boost (and it feels like it). next up is the FMIC and up the boost, and a fiero throttle body. we are aiming for 230-250hp, wich is not to hard.
getting smoked by a dsm realy doesnt bother me, i mean, all they are doing is taking their crank for a walk. turbo honda's and such, whatever, doesnt bother me. and if a 4 cyl can hand me my ass n/a, props to em, it takes a lot of work.

Some of them are pretty tough. kid at work had a v-tec civic that could eat my cavalier no problem. he had I/H/E, pulleys, ported manifold. all stuff i helped him put on, that kinda softens the blow. 15.2 was his best. i had the 2.8 with a cam and no tuning bolted to a crappy isuzu 5 speed. and with 16" slugs slowing me down, it was pretty much a masacare. If you aren't friends with a liar, you aren't friends with anyone.

I had my ass handed to me by an early 90s MR2 Turbo, Turbo civic hatch, turbo prelude, almost by a 91 accord with a b16 swap(that i didnt know about, imagine my suprise). Come to think of it, i've never been beaten by a non turbo 4. Makes me fell a little better. Now i have whipped my fair share of 4 banger and 6 banger rice.

Ah, yes, the four cylinder ownage. I know it well. At yon local drag strip this summer past, did I line up 'gainst a turbo SRT-4 Neon, whilst I sat astride mine Suburban. And lo! did the Neon break 13 seconds, blowing the doors off the Burb handily.
...in other words, I got a nice helping of Mopar meat crammed into my exhaust pipe. 19.2 @ 70 was my trap. Gotta say though, that's pretty decent for an 86 Burb with a detuned 350 in front of a 700-R4 and a shit-ton of extra crap in the back.Kaiser George IX: 1996 Buick Century Special wagon. 213-SFI. 250k miles. I admit even the newer stock N/A 4 banger compacts out there give me trouble. Today it took ~90% throttle just to keep up to a riced-up Focus. I really gotta get my ported 3400 top-end installed. Then I shouldn't have too much to fear from the wanna-be's at least.
I'm not too fussed about being beaten by a boosted 4cyl either. That's typically normal when N/A goes up against anything with FI.1995 Grand Am SE

my car was an '86 cavi with a rebuilt 2.8 with 20K on it, those were iron heads wich dont flow like the newer ones. i put in an aftermarket cam that moved the power band up around 4K rpm. that kinda killed me since the 5 speed i had swapped in had a 3.45:1 FDR, add in much heavier than stock wheels/tires that were a massive 225 wide. i didnt use factory head gaskets so i think i lost a little compression due to that. stock z24 hood cowl hood intake, the only other go fast mod i had was 2.5" catback with a turbo muffler.
safe to say i know a lot more about cars now thanks to this site. and i won't be making the same mistakes i did then. new build is a gen2 3.1 bored out with a crane h260 cam and roller rockers. i'm still working on getting the CR under 11:1 without getting different pistons so its a little more pocket friendly when it comes to gas. i'll do a real exhaust this time with a free flowing cat and muffler. and finshing it with the original 4 speed with 3.65:1 FDR and a good clutch. that should keep me neck and neck with the kids at work.If you aren't friends with a liar, you aren't friends with anyone.

there is an n/a civic hatch a friend of mine has that will give anything a good run. its an 88-91 style civic hatch with a k20 (rsx type s) motor in it. its 197hp stock, and its been proven to be underrated. im not a civic guy, but this thing is dam cool. the swap is all custom. custom mounts, axles, header, had to chop up the rad support, mount an rsx shifter and use cables (it has a 6 speed). i beleive he is using hondata to tune, and is over 200hp at the wheels. 200hp+1500lbs=fast. there have been some others do the swap and are seeing mid 12s with a stock motor. he has plans to turbo it in the future.
im not big into hondas, but dam is that a cool swap. its kinda is the same effect as putting a 3400 into a sprint (or at least the same amount of work).
