  • In the future your ISP will be more like AOL

I am posting this on multiple forums because it affects us all. Please feel free to link or copy this post to any other forum your on.

Most people aren’t aware of what’s going on but as I work in the telecom industry myself I’ve already seen both the technical and legal groundwork being laid for this. This is not a joke. If the telecoms have their way. This WILL happen.

Jon Wiener weighs in on UCLA's Dirty Thirty, Alexander Cockburn takes aim at the New York Times's obsession with child prostitution and Stuart Klawans

They are pushing for it folks. Not only will you pay access fees for your net connection but there are pushes in technology and in regulatory circles to charge us for everything we do on the net. Our ISPs want to not only charge us more but prioritize what we see based on if the site your visiting has paid the ISP to have preferential treatment.

That’s right, big sites like Amazon and Google will pay these fees while small sites like MyMonte and other favorites will become slow or cut off completely because as content providers we can’t pay the fees.

This will pervert the internet and they way we see it today. Read up on this as it WILL be affecting you if you use the internet regularly. It wont happen today but in the next 5-10years you’ll be seeing this.

    Why care about it now?

Because now is when the telecom and cable companies are lobbying Washington to get the last of the Common Carrier laws and other consumer protective legislations thrown out/changed so they can move forward with their vision for the internet.

The telecoms and cable companies believe that since they built the networks then they can do as they please. I say they built the networks using our "the customers" money to provide an open service that we were promised. Now they want to take what we paid for and switch it for something with less to offer and costs more. This is not fair to the consumer (you and me) and is only so the telecoms can line their pockets.

So if you care at all about what information you have to access and the freedom you have to access it. Write your representatives let them know how you feel.

This is a big deal for myself personally and I will be keeping you updated on ways you can help. If this is allowed to happen then I can pretty much guarantee MyMonte.com and many of the other sites we host will likely be shut down as we can already only barely pay our yearly server fees, much less the additional costs these networks are looking to foist onto both customers and content providers.

Crazy shit. But I can see it happening. Although ever provider wants it. Obviously every user will not want it. So whos gonna win?
