GM vehicals with oil change reminder

How do these things work? A buddy of mine says they are complicated, that they determine all factors of driving to determine when oil changes are needed. Factoring distance, engine hours, tempurature, etc. Or, are they just an odometer meets a calender.

The newer Oil Life Monitor systems are based on Engine Revolutions, and Engine Temperature. They are NOT based on Milage.

Yeah, the oil change remider on my STE is based on miles only. On my parents Pontiac Montana van, you can 5000+ if driving conditions are right before the light comes on. However, the 3400 in that van seems to eat oil after 3000-4000 miles.
