Question for the serious audio buffs

Currently, I have a set of tweeters in my door down by my mid-bass (they would be positioned at the level of you calf and are angled up toward the driver and passenger). Now, it sounds okay, but you can definitely tell the difference between the current setup and something where the tweeters are up a little higher.

On my drive home the other weekend, I had a piece of metal trim pop off from the dashboard, right under the windshield (basically right over the VIN tag). While looking at putting it back on, I realized that if I removed one more piece, I could probably fit my tweeters right in this metal piece. What are you thoughts on this? I can angle the tweeters any way I like so they do not have to just bounce off the windshield. I think it would really help raise my soundstage.

IMHO, the higher the better.... Is this in the Century that you're wanting to do this?

No, no, it's the Skylark. The Century already has them at around the steering wheel level. The Skylark originally had a two-way in the front doors.

I have many times thought about mounting tweeters in the same area of my Beretta, but my only problem was always that my tweeters are a little too big to fit up inside there (lemme show you...)



Sorry for the big pic, but as you can see, they are just a tad too big to put up there. But here are a few things you need to look at...

- No matter how you get them up there, they are going to have to bounce off of the windshield. This will cause the sound to become somewhat blurred. You want high sounds to be directional so as to help widen the soundstage. I have many times heard that the best way to have tweeters is pointing directly out, perpendicular to the side of the car.

- Not sure about how the dash looks exactly, but you might end up screwing your soundstage up even more by putting them up there. The further you sperate the mids from the highs, the easier it is to pick out the location of each speaker, and the less "true" it sounds. And since the door mids will already be skewed (left speaker ~4ft away from ear, right speaker ~7ft away), this may actually hurt the sound.

- The soundstage can also be affected by where the crossover points are for the speakers. If the tweeters are crossed over too high, it won't help raise the soundstage at all because the majority of the sound is still coming from the mids, which are low.

I think that's all I want to say for right now. I'll just show you my current front stage setup (its slightly different now with the mid and tweeter both being mounted in the stock kickpanel instead of just the tweeter). Damn... not a very good pick, but oh well...

what about mounting the tweeters mounted in the plastic trim up between the side window/windshield and having midrange on the dash? I think that would sound pretty good as long as the tweeter is set to lower volume since it is a bit closer to you. I have the stock speakers in the dash they don't sound bad considering they blast it at the windshield.. seperating the higher frequency away from the windshield would make it sound a bit clearer.

I'm no car audio expert ... just audio enthusiast in general.

Hmmm.... sounds like I'll have to get creative. I also thought about the sail panel and a space by the door handle. I'll take some pictures once I get closer to my digital camera......

I don't know about skylarks, or 95s in general, but i DO know that you can get the tweeters in the door in a 96 Grand Am (by the piece which covers behind the mirror)
