  • Hybrid Road Tax

Should Hybrid owners pay a separate road tax? I pay mine every time I visit the pump. They use the same roads as I do. So, I vote Yes.

Hybrids were brought about to reduce pollution, not to pad the owners pocket.

Please explain your opinion with your vote.

      RE: Hybrid Road Tax

this one is very dependant upon your state, some states use gas tax for highway infrstructure, others do not and may do it in terms of yearly registrations and taxation.

however many state goverment and the federal goverment give various dedcutions to hybrid owners. in some states hybrid owners can use HOV lanes even when there is only 1 person in the car.

        RE: Hybrid Road Tax

I think hybrid people are already getting enough of a shaft... Was reading an article a month or so ago on them and it basically stated that if gas prices stayed above $3/gal, it would still take the hybrid owner like 7+ years to finally break even with the "better economy" compared to a similar vehicle, based on the initial cost of the vehicles. And that was just based off MSRP I think, so not factoring in that you can drop the price on a regular vehicle, while people were willing to pay more than the MSRP for the hybrid.

But if you are an environmental freak, maybe its worth it to you...

          RE: Hybrid Road Tax

          Here you go.... http://www.cnn.com/2005/AUTOS/09/23/...ves/index.html

And a couple quotes from the article...

"A hybrid Honda Accord costs about $3,800 more than the comparable non-hybrid version, including purchase, maintenance and insurance costs. Over five years, assuming 15,000 miles of driving per year, you'll make up that cost in gasoline money if the price of gas goes up immediately to $9.20 a gallon and averages that for the whole period.

For the Ford Escape hybrid, the difference is less stark. To make up the difference over five years between the Escape hybrid and a Ford Escape XLT, gas prices would have to average $5.60 after you purchase the vehicle."

            RE: Hybrid Road Tax

They still use gas, just less of it. Saying that they should pay a seperate tax is like saying we should make those with poor gas milage like hummers pay less. When's supper?

They should and will pay about the same tax if they do alot of highway driving bc they don't save much gpm if the don't use the brakes.

Here's a good question: what the hell happened to those Civics and Golfs that where getting 40+ mpg in the early 80s? Or did I just smoke too much crack when I was a teenager and don't have my numbers right?

many of the small economy 4bangers still do get that kind of mileage with the right driving.

another reason why hybrid is BS at least on the saving gas front. The only thing its good for is the warm fuzzy you get from helping the enviorment.

The funny thing is. The batteries in those cars (I've heard) have a life expectancy of 6-7 years. So, as soon as you break even, bam you get nailed for like a $8000 bill for new batteries.

                      Hybrids are a joke.
