Elite, this is my point exactly. For my needs, and the needs of probably 99% of garage shops, stick is a good choice for thick material.

Your right stick has the advantage of cost and portability. I said that in the begining. I am agreeing with you. However it is not intelligent to say "stick is good for the big stuff" when wire feed (not .035 or .045) is very capable of anything "big." No one would ever use .035 wire if you are trying to penetrate into 1", obviously you are going to be using heavy metal core and running 300+ amps in spray transfer.
BTY, tell me again just how much these 300+ Amp spray transfer MIG machines cost? Probbaly out of the price range for someone looking for a garage welder, which this discussion is centered around. If you are going to quote me, at least be smart enough to do it right. Never did I say "stick is good for the big stuff". I said "For anything thicker, I would prefer a stick welder anyway, which can be had cheap." This opinion is based on my experience with stick, and cost.

I have done up to 1/4" with my 110V MIG, and much thicker with an inexpensive stick. This covers all of my needs. To get a MIG that would handle the thickness I can do with the stick, I would have had to spend a LOT more money. Does not spending money for the sake of spending money make me less intelligent? I don't think so. Just because you get to use really nice expensive MIG equipment for your job doesn't mean it is a better choice for light home use.

Let's get back to who is the better welder! I AM the best welder in my household!! :P (Although my wife can use glue pretty well. And my Dog can weld a turd on the front porch, when it is 15 degrees outside. No Argon needed.)
