what kind of prob are you having with PHPBB sapp? Ive been doing a lot of custom modifcation for MM so I'm getting to know the ins and outs pretty well.
I would be happy to help you troubleshoot send me a PM.

I dont even know what the problem is, it happened when I tried to add some add ons for the board. I think a complete reinstall is all that will help. I may work on that later, making the forum a subdomain and seeing if I can get a backup of the forum database to work out easily. Its hard to get it to work since it doesn't like taking the whole file at 1 time
I want something stable so I can try to get the theme looking nice like MM. This layout is so basic Its all about content here, but having the forums look nice wouldn't be bad at all.Ben

yeah, a good look can go a long way, I still have a lot to do with the MM layout, when Im done I want it to be hard to tell its even PHPBB. Some of the PHPBB mods dont seem to be all they are cracked up to be. Ive had trouble getting some to work without modifying them myself.
Im surprised your having DB issues are your trying to use the backup and restore procedure in PHPBB admin? I have found that one does not work to well. If your ISP provides you with phpMySQL I would reccomend that as its not plauged by the timeout and script errors the PHPBB backup and restore utility has.
Ive been doing it that way for a year, the MM DB is aproaching over 100meg now (the DB used to be 150meg until I started pruning the useless forums) and still no problems.
You may not have to do a full reinstall, just try creating a new app folder on your webserver and deploy the stcok PHPBB code files and the hand edit the config.php to match your settings (instead of using the installer) then youll be able to see if its the mods your doing.
Personally I run Apache and MySQL on my local machiene with a copy of the DB and do my editing and testing there, once I get it working right I then upload the changes. It helps so that I dont completly hose things when I forget to put a ";" somewhere.
You really dont need vbulltien IMHO its pretty overrated. If you know what your doing with PHP you can get PHPBB to do just about anything. If your just following along with the mod scripts availble its a bit more diffcult but theres still a lot that can be done.
One day when MM is making enough money I plan to get away from PHP all together and get on a Microsoft .NET server so I can do some real cool boards
