This is the highest evolution of Chevrolet's original 60-degree V6, so called because the two rows of pistons that form the "V" are set at a 60 degree angle. This engine is a direct descendant of the 2.8 liter 60-degree V6 that appeared in the first Chevrolet Citations and eventually found its way into the Camaro and even had a stint in the Blazer and compact pickup trucks. Although closely related, that engine doesn't outwardly resemble today's 3100 at all. The 3.4L dual overhead cam V6 that used to power GM's fast front-wheel drive cars such as the Lumina Z34 is a bored-out version of this engine, as is the 3.4L V6 found in the new GM minivans. In a wise move, GM has recently dropped the DOHC 3.4L V6 and is now using the superior Buick-designed 3800 Series II V6 in its place.
I think then 3100 block look the same as 3.1L blocks dont you? The 3.4L DOHC engine is a bored out version of the 3.1L? Really seems to me there is a tad bit more engineering in that engine. 3800 superior? rrrright.

Read the rest seems to go from loving the 660 then loving the 3800... weird page.

Yeah that person REALLY needs to do some hardcore research on the 660, did you see the bore specs? 3.51"? Last I checked the 3100 had a 3.503" to 3.504" depending on what refernce you use.

I gotta wonder about that 3800. I've never been beaten by one that wasn't supercharged, and I've raced plenty...

I can beat the supercharged ones-just ask Bowtiekid's friend-we were side by side at 120

Down to basics he is correct. The 3.4L is a 3.1, just bored and with a VERY different top half. If you check out the block where the heads bolt, they even have the pushrod holes

This is also the reson why the 3.4L likes spinning bearings and doesn't like going to 7000 rpm, the crank and rods are for a 3.1, made for 160-170hp, not 210.

Unfortunately, although it is still found in a variety of GM cars, the 60-degree V6's days are numbered. It now seems highly likely that GM will eventually replace these engines in their current applications with a line of entirely new small-block V6 engines with overhead-camshaft valve trains much like the German-designed engine found in the Cadillac Catera.

How come everyone forgets that the base model Grand Prix's still get the 3100????

How come everyone forgets about the new 3500 and upcoming 3900? Its days have yet to begin, so how can they be numbered?

I see. However, the 2004 Buick Century's have 3100's. Not that big of a deal, but they are still in at least one new vehicle.

660 days numbered?? No matter what they will continue to make V6s, all of which will probably be 60 degree engines. Just look at Honda, Nissan , Ford, ANY brand with good V6 engines are ALL 60*.

I actually said that you can no longer get the 3100 in the GP. I meant GP only, not all GMs.
