  • 3.5 problem....this is some crazy shit!

My dad took the Aurora to the dealer and from what he told me, the 3.5 has a weird system that uses heat from exhaust gas, and routes that heat back into the coolant system somehow. This is to increase the coolant temp faster after a cold start to get heat to the cabin quicker. Well aparently there is a leak in a gasket involving a cross-over pipe of some sort related to this system.

Can anyone give me any info on this strange exhaust/coolant system? Anything at all anyone can give is appreciated.

You know, I've never heard of a system quite like this...in fact if you think about it with how hot exhaust gasses get, especially at the X-over wouldn't that instantly vaporise coolant.
Anyway, I did some quick looking around at Oldsmobile Forums and the Aurora Club and could find any info on this problem. Maybe you can try asking someone at the Aurora Club...Aurora Club

Edit: Or just get under it and follow anything that apears to be connected to the exhaust.

I think your getting the fact that the "Coolant Crossover" for the Northstar/3.5L shortstar engines connect the back of the heads together, (which on some northstars also connects up across to the throttle body) The EGR Valve bolts onto the Coolant X-over pipe, which obviously has the EGR Tubes coming in and out of the egr.

Does not route exhaust gas into the cooling system. Just has the EGR mouted on the coolant crossover pipe.

Common problem for coolant leaks at the crossover gaskets. Nothing new.

Oil leaks on Nortstars are much more fun. 16 hours to do a lower crankcase half. Good $$ when your on flat rate
