  • So begins the flaming....

Hey everybody! Been a while. Well, I went to the dark side a few months ago, and traded my 00 bu in on a 00 5 spd 3.8 camaro. I am looking into starting a remote mount turbo, and am having trouble selecting one. Most of the guys use a T3/T04 hybrid setup. The problem with this is, it cuts your gas mileage down to about 12 mpg. I am wanting to start with something small, with a smaller trim, to help with this problem. It will have about 3.5-4lbs of boost and an alcohol injection system until I get an intercooler. I have been looking at a Holset H2E for starters. Any reccomendations?

Here is a list of my current mods.
Free ram air, air silencer delete, K&N, descreened maf, 160 thermo, accel 8mm wires, bosch 4+ plugs, catco high flow cat, glass pack, aluminum driveshaft, motive 3.73's w/auburn posi unit.
If it doesn\'t go fast, make it!!!

if its a 3.8 why not just do a m90 supercharger? you'd still do the 4-5psi of boost and its all under the hood so you dont have to worry about your turbo suddenly going missing. your actual air intacke would be in a place that it wouldnt pick up so much debris and yout plumbing would be slashed buy lik 99%.

Because if you just slap an M-90 on a non-s/c 3.8 you will be rewarded with literally thousands of pieces of engine flying in all directions at terminal speeds . The s/c an non-s/c engines were completely different beasts. The s/c engine used ALL forged internals where the non had none. Hell, even the main bearings on the s/c were BIGGER than a chevy 454!!! boosting a non supercharged engine is NOT a good idea.
Tuning a car is full of compromises. You must decide if you are willing to give up either reliability, performance, or a whole load of cash. Also remember that repairs will seem to come up much more often as you strive for even more performance

not to mention it would take a lot of work to get it to fit anyway

why turbocharge a car and only run 3.5-4 lbs of boost?

That would mean a turbo setup is equaly a bad idea. I wouldn't think 5 psi would ruin the motor if its tuned correctly, but i don't know anything about that motor so my 2 cents isn't really worth 2 cents here.

many people have pushed 12 lbs of intercooled boost from a turbo into their 3.8L f-bodies and not had many troubles

                Holy Christ.

Yes flaming because I rock the 3.8 now. And Studley Camaro, I am a 90 degree fucker now, but I used to be a 60 degree man. With 2 cars, in fact.

OK. I will start with 3.5-4 lbs of boost to begin with because I am not going with an intercooler to begin with. I am starting with an alcohol injection system. Long story, not going to get into it. I will get an intercooler later on down the line. And several camaro guys with turbos run 8 lbs of intercooled boost DAILY for several thousand miles without ill effects. Some have turned the boost up to 10 lbs and are seeing 390 hp at the crank. But then the tranny's evidently can't hold all of the horsepower.

And I know the 60v6 is a good engine. Reliable, and very responsive.

                  RE: Holy Christ.

if you are going remote mount turbo and the turbo is behind the axle, your long charge pipe acts as an intercooler, about a 50% efficient one, and it has leff pressure drop than an intercooler. if you run remote mount and alcohol injection, intercooler isnt needed.
