  • Volvo,... Yah! It's Svedish!

OK, Ohio is doing away with E-Check! Halla-fucking-luya! (Not until after the 1st of the year) But...I just bought a cute 1985 Volvo 244GL. FOR MY WIFE!!! Hey, Volvo is a good solid automobile! It failed. Hydro Carbons were fine, Carbon-Monoxide was fine. NOx (Oxides of Nitrogen), failed it. Not by much. Any thoughts as to why? I hope it isn't the O2 sensor. That sucker costs 152 bucks! I figure a full tune up, and some 100% Methanol might clear it up?

NOx can only be cause by too high of combustion temperatures. Mostly due to poor or no EGR operation.

I love E-Check, Smog Check and Air Care. It keeps beaters off the road and forces people to maintain their cars. There is still alot of shit driving around but I have sure noticed that I dont see as many stalled cars on the road as I used to when I was a kid.

Plus it saves the enviroment which we cannot afford to loose any more of.

The O2 was the cause of my failure in NOx category.

I just read the article, it looks like us in Northeast Ohio will still have to have our cars tested.

While I agree in theory that testing should keep the junkers off the road, you'd never believe that in the area where I work, I'd bet that 75% of the cars on the road around that neighborhood would never pass an emissions test or a safety inspection if they had one.

E Check is a joke in Ohio. I come from Missouri originally, where you check a car for safety. Here, as long as you don't pollute the air, you can drive with worn tie rods, or bad brakes, or no power steering, bad ball joints. You can crash, but don't pollute. Plus, they only do it in 14 counties. Dayton, but not Cleveland? And I will check the EGR system, thanx bty. (Cool! I got to use the soapbox emoticon) It just tweaks my melon!

Case in point. Friend of mine lives in Enon, Ohio. Less than 10 miles away, works in Dayton, drives a 91 Taurus with a straight pipe, smokes like my grandma, no back glass,(Plastic), usuallly has on a donut tire. Car smells like cat and ass. No E Check. Lives in another county, but drives here. WTF?

I think the reason is there is better engineering in vehicles overall not only in the smog part. Take a look at a 75 - 80 vehicle. A vac nightmare compared to todays vehicles. Those babies were a guarantee to break down at some point.
