RE: SANDBLASTER ALLOY WHEEL, DIAMOND SPOKE ?

There is a shop here in town that sandblasted 4 of my 16x8 honeycomb rims for $5 each, and would powdercoat them for $15 each. They do refinishing of factory rims for the OEM's when they get defective ones, so my rims only took them like 10 minutes to blast. A shop that doesn't do big volumes of wheels will probably charge more.

This is at a production shop that only does wheel blasting/refinishing. They have 6-8 huge blast booths, and thats all these guys do all day is blast rims...so it only takes them a couple minutes for each rim. Almost any machine shop will have a blasting cabinet, but will probably take alot longer for them to do since they don't do wheels every day. Also, make sure you remove the plastic center caps before you get them blasted....the blaster will ruin them.

So how were the results? Are they more rough looking now? Did they/you respray the rims? What about the outter lip?

Mine are rough and need some attention. Is it worth powdercoating them? And maybe can you give a lil detail as to what that is?

          Thanks

Mine turned out great. The wheels are just bare aluminum right now. I plan to eventually paint and clearcoat them. The surface is a little rougher than stock just because the paint has been removed. The outer lip on mine are a smooth machined finish, so I will leave them like that (only paint the spokes) and just clearcoat them.

Powdercoating is just paint that is sprayed on in powder form, then baked in an oven to cure it. It tends to be more durable than sprayed on paint. The biggest problem is the high temp needed to cure the powdercoat can cause cast aluminum wheels to be come brittle and crack. I am not sure if there is powdercoat available that cures at a lower temperature that is safe for wheels. I have read mixed reviews on this, so can?t really give you a recommendation.

marty, do you know if they will do the powder coat in any color for the 15$ each? also do you know the approxime turnaround

or maybe a phone #/website so i could get in touch with them

oh and powdercoating an alumnium wheel is fine, the stock "paint" on almost all wheels today is actually powder

When I talked to them about the powdercoating 2 years ago, they would do any color for $15 as long as it was one they normally used for the production wheels. If they had to special order it, the price goes up. Their shop burned down 2 years ago, and they rebuilt in a different location, but I haven't been back to see what their current pricing is. I will stop by there this week and check it out.

They don't advertise this work, its just something they do on the side if you show up with the wheels. Turn-around is usually a day or two. When they powdercoat them, they spray the whole wheel, face, lip, and all. If you want just the face colored, you would have to mask them off...not sure if they will do that.
