  • What about this motor

The 2.8L V6 found in the 1985 Chevrolet S10 and GMC S15, it is a carburated engine not fuel injected.
Is it a fast motor?(as in hold together @ high revs)
Is the 4 speed tranny mounted on it in the trucks worth a crap?
Does this engine have any potential for power?
Is this a decent motor for gas mileage?
    Does this engine sound good?
The reason I'm asking these questions about this engine is because I can buy a 1986 S15 Jimmy body for 100$ and I already have the engine and tranny, I bought them in a wrecked 1985 S15 for 250$ . The Jimmy body was some type of fuel injection and as I mentioned before the engine has a carb on it. I want yalls honest opinions about this project. Any feedback about it will be appreciated!

Are you in a state with emission or is this not a problem ?

It makes little power. But that was the norm in the 80's and early 90's.

However the engine is pretty descent. The price sounds right, so why not.

From my exp. these are good motors for grunt not speed. Racing down the highway? No, not unless you've got 10 miles to get up to speed. Pull yourself out of a hole? HELL YEA!!! Anyday. Now, there are ways to improve the motor for speed, namely add an Edelbrock intake and cam, a holley carb, and a set of headers to a true dual exhaust. A little work but can be worth it.
The tranny has ALOT to do with the performance of the motor. If your tranny has highway gears the truck can cruise at a nice clip but wont burn the tyres off the line. If it has normal gearing, your set. If it has gearing like my jimmy (grunt gears) then the motor will make all the power in the bottom end and scream like a banshy at any speed over 65mph.
Hope this helps, for the money spent, I'd say go for it.
Tuning a car is full of compromises. You must decide if you are willing to give up either reliability, performance, or a whole load of cash. Also remember that repairs will seem to come up much more often as you strive for even more performance
