  • Future swap on my mind.

Ok I have been pondering 2 things for a while and am just looking for some opinions. Keep in mind any swap I do must be 100% emissions friendly for 1993. Fully drivable everyday and easy on gas aswell.

I have been considering 2 swaps. The first it an LS(1,2 or 6) V8. No I dont want a Vortec V8 it is too heavy and I want it near the same weight as my current all iron 3.4L. Also it doesn't pack the punch of an LS engine. Second consideration is a 3.6L VVT. The good thing about this is I can keep my tranny and by pics I have been seeing it looks like I can maybe keep my mounts too. I dont want a 3500 or 3900 because they are a bitch to make RWD. Hood clearance maybe an issue too.

Now keep in mind these engine will probabally cost near the sme amount used. But the V8 will have more power off the start and more support aswell. However it will cost more and take more time to install. The 3.6L will take some custom work but at least I can keep alot (or all) of the drivetrain and it will be smaller (length wise) leaving more room in the engine compartment. The V6 will give me alot of good usable power and probabally put the truck in the 14's. But the V8 would put in in the 12's or 13's

    What do you guys think?

Yea thats what I am leaning towards. The 3.6L however would be quite an exotic swap. But then again 350 to 400 horsepower out of the box is tempting. The only draw back from an LS engine is I will have to change the tranny and driveshaft along with other stuff in the engine compartment.

Only thing I'm wondering with the 3.6 would be the PCM. I know there are alot of aftermarket tuning abilities for the LS1, but probably nothing for the 3.6VVT. So you'd have to figure out that or swap in the PCM as well (which would be a nightmare, IMO).

Yes of course I would need to swap the PCM. For the LS V8 I would just use an aftermarket one a gut my currect computer. But I would need the GM PCM for the 3.6L Because of the VVT. So that would be a challenge but still doable.

Sadly Im going to have to agree LSx engine.. I'm waiting to see what the new generation Camaro is going to be like... If I like it. Might be getting one. My next vehicle will likely have the LSx family of engines in it

the problem with the 3.6L is the PCM, but not only the PCM, the whole compelete wiring harness but the rest of the modules that comunicate with the PCM on the Data line, without those modules the PCM is going to either not run or freak out... Not to mention I believe the 3.6L is already on GM's new CAN data line system. Higher speed comunication line. All vehicles will be going to this soon however.

Hmm well yea I have always been leaning towards the LSx. Although the 3.6L would be neat and original. But the LSx is pretty original right now. 99% of the V8 swaps in s-10's are all iron pigs with a 4bbl on top. Even people who do LT1's rip off the EFI and put a carb on. I don't know why... carbs are SHIT!!!!.

So anyway say I do this LSx I will most likely use a stand alone EFI system since incorperating a GM PCM would be more difficult. Question (Colin would know) will a Holley commander (or similar) be able to operate the EGR and other emissions systems? I would think not but its worth a shot. If this cannot be done I will probabally go with a older GM PCM system which is no so incorperated into the rest of the car.

Sadly No, my car is so badly non-emissions compliant its not funny... I'm such a dirty fucking asshole for not having any of it on there.
                    here are my offences:
                    no catalytic converter,
no EGR, ECU does not control the egr at all however,
no Purge/EVAP system controls, again ECU does not control this stuff,
However I slack off and dont have anything as Manitoba Regulations do not enforce i have any of it.. (not an excuse just why i can get away with it for now) Vehicles older than 94 dont need Cats to pass safeties, and we do not have any Emissions Regulations or testing at all.

I'm sorry mother nature, for i have sinned...

Do the LS1, or LS2, or LS6, or LS7 swap....

you see these pics yet? http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=965859
