  • Clueless on paint guns and type of paint

So, who wants to enlighten me on these things I need to do some painting, on my car and on a 74 olds cutlass. I need to know what a good paint gun brand/model would be, what to look for in nozzles, gravity feed vs whatever else, type of paint to use, etc Anything would help me out at this point.

HVLP gravity feed guns are about the easiest to use for average users (like yours truly) CH does make a good one but I have used the cheaper knockoff models for around $85 and they work good, just keep them clean! Run lots of reducer thru the gun after you're finished.

For paint, best bang for the buck that I've researched and used is the PPG Omni lineup (urethane paint, not lacquer or acrylic crap). You can get a BC/CC setup , or "single stage" (great for white, black, and red) Also have the supply shop set you up with a suitable primer, the stuff I used was PURPLE (it wasnt epoxy primer, though that stuff is tough as nails. I'll have to get back to you on that one)

Also, look at spending about $200-250 per car. Including base, clear, primer, primer reducer, reducer for the BC and hardener for the CC, cleaning tools, measuring cups, tack rags, DEFINETLY GET degreaser solvent to prep the area before initial spray, gun, ammo, etc.

If you go with single stage white for the GP, you'll save quite a bit. A gallon of it went for like $50 which turns into 1.5ish gallons with the 4:1:1 mix ratio (4 parts paint, 1 part reducer, 1 part hardener) enough to do the whole car. Reducer is only sold in gallons but it's cheap ($10-20), the hardener is like $15. Just add in costs of the primer etc.

Thanks My dad is looking the gun up, and is curious about nozzles. 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, whatever that means. I definetly want to use a base coat and clear coat, and will probably stick with white. Was also considering black and grey but who knows.

i have painted alot of cars and trailers and so on, its all i do in the summer ,if you want to see an example go to my www link and check out my car domain , i painted my car last summer. here is a tip dont go cheap on the gun, it really does make a big difference, you should buy a devilbliss probably a finish line if your not going to paint alot, it should cost you probably $130 u.s and for paint, ive used alot of brands before and my favourite is sherwin willams but sometimes its called 3rd demension. if you go base/clear, it should cost you about $450 u.s. that includes primer and all the hardner and reducers. if you have never painted before practice because you will more than likely run it, more on the clear though. if you need any help i am a pro just ask.

last time i bought paint, i got 2 quarts of epoxy primer and a gallon of ppg acrylic enamel for $250. the bc/cc for the 54 with a 2 color job was over $500.

either you guys have some extremely cheap paint stores, or you're using extremely cheap crappy paint.

Anyone know if Binks are good guns? If so, I think I have 2 around somewhere that I'd be willing to get rid of cheap. All I know about them is that they are gravity feed and at least 20 years old. I'll see if I can dig them up tonight.
