anyone heard about putting kerosene or transmission fluid in the crankcase to help clean the engine?

I guess you could use those. But the engine flushes that come already made are like solvent that you ADD to your oil to clean it out. I would not recommend running any of those straight. But, the consensus around here is that crankcase flushes are a bad idea, same with any kind of oil additive. The reason is because if your engine is really dirty with deposits. When you break them up and they fall to the bottom of the pan it may clog your pick-up tube. Thus, causing your engine to run "sans-lubrication" then KAAABOOM. As far as additives go, just use regular oil, it already has plenty of additives in it. If you want to have better lubrication use synthetic and a good filter.
By the way, the clogged pick-up tube is not speculation. Guys around here have seen it happen. It seems to be a recognisable problem for the "Mr. Lube" places that push the "Flush" on everyone.

Yea seafoam is good.
Oh and so long as you change your oil and no coolant leaks have occured then the engine should be pretty clean. Good gas, like Chevron, will also help keep your combustion chamber clean.1993 EXT. CAB, 3.4L V6 TBI, 5spd manual. Sonoma
