I wish there were pictures of this... but this happened yesterday in town.
A Fort Riley soldier walked away from an accident that split his car in two Saturday morning.
Adam L. Blake, 19, was transported to Mercy Regional Health Center as a precaution, and released.
"He miraculously didn't have any injuries," said RCPD Sgt. Stephen Boyda, adding he was amazed no one was killed in the one-vehicle accident on Kimball Avenue near its intersection with Plymouth. Blake was apparently wearing his seatbelt.
"The car is completely ripped in half," added Ofc. Brek Jager. "The axle just snapped."
Blake was arrested for reckless driving and released on $750 bond. "Speed was definitely a factor" in he accident, Boyda said. The speed limit in that area of Kimball is 30 miles per hour.
Stephen Peters, a resident of the area, was driving east on Kimball at about 9:45 a.m. when he saw a green Mustang going in the opposite direction. He said the Mustang attempted to cut around another car using the right-hand lane ? which ends just over a hill at the intersection with Plymouth. According to police, Blake then cut across the roadway and into the south shoulder, crossing a side street, hitting a curb, taking out a phone box and going into a group of evergreen trees.
Jager said the car apparently hit a tree, snapping the axle and sending the rear half of the car back into the roadway. Robbie Haffener, of Manhattan Wrecker, said he'd never had to pick up pieces of a car before.
"I've had them smushed but never blown apart," he said while picking up pieces of speaker and seat off the ground. He eventually loaded four separate parts of the car onto his flat bed ? the rear, the front, the bumpers, and the convertible top ? as well as several miscellaneous bits.
