  • Opinions on profanity

I want to hear opinions on cussing on TV. Dale jr got nailed for saying "shit" on TV. What part of our population is effected by "bad language on TV". Seems to me if there is so big a problem with language that the networks should be required to do tape delay. On the other hand would this be considered censorship? Bang that keyboard.

You have to look at it from the perspective of the ENTIRE nation. TV currently has a rating system which allows words like shit to be said (NipTuck for example). But these shows have a disclaimer, etc... Then there is NASCAR. Every young boy loves to watch NASCAR. The parent's feel it is ok because it is (for the most part) a non-violent sport that is really starting to grow in the public's eye. So they let their young child watch it. I know I watched it many years ago when I was just a tike (I remember Bobby Allison tearing the spectator fence down while flipping through the air). When the driver's "slip", some parents will no longer allow their children to watch, and NASCAR looses fans. Remember, it was NASCAR, not the FCC that issued the fine. They feel that their driver's should be role models. It doesn't matter if "shit" was said in jubilation. Would you want your 9 yr old walking around saying shit in jubilation?

If the FCC got involved, it would probably do like it did to CBS and the Janet Jackson thing and fine each and every station that aired the profanity.

I personally think it can be useful sometimes. I agree with bszopi, but in other cercumstances, like around adults. This is why the police and fire, at least in Co Springs, are allowed to curse in public. I can't tell you how many times we have. BY escalating our voices and sometimes using that type of language, you'd be surprised at much better people cooperate.

But they do not like us cussing when there really is no reason. Around the station guys do of course, but not when just talkign to people liek after a car wreck.

I think they went a little too far with the fine, $10K and 25 points? Come on now, that seems a little much for saying "shit", especially in the context it was used, I don't remember exactly what he was saying, but it went along with the sentance.

          I'll pose this question:

If Jr. used the word "crap" instead of "shit" do you think there would have still been a fine, if so what do you speculate the fine would have been?

I mean persoanlly I'm more offended by the word "crap" than "shit", even though in certain contexts they can both mean the same thing, but usually "crap" is talking more about excrement, than the way "shit" is used, usually used in place of the word "things" or "stuff". I could go on about the different uses of each word, but I think you can see where I'm going with this.

Brad, those parents that you speak of, that would/will no loinger allow thier children to watch NASCAR (for example), because J.r used a single profanity (to some), in a time of great excitment, are way too sensitive, and are sheltering thier children from the real world, causing social problems for thier children later in life, because they will not know how or when certain social aspects are or are not acceptable, trust me I know, unfortunatly.
I'm not advocating that we should swear and cuss around children, we should by all means "watch ourt language", but a slip here and there is actually a good thing in the long run.

          just my $0.02

              lol

in the same day, john force used the same word in an interveiw. any drag racing fan knows what his interveiws sound like (he talks so fast you can hardley understand him) and he got a rather hefty fine as well.

i personaly dont care, but it is regulation to have a disclaimer during programs that have bad language/ extreme violence in them. so what, will they need to put up a disclaimer saying "drivers may use foul language during interviews"??? i doubt it.

now the $10k fine, to dale jr, that nothing. you gotta remember how much money the drivers and teams make from a race. if i remember right, the team in last position still gets almost $100k, so a $10k fine is like $100 to us.

If you want to know what curse words will do if we use them too much then just watch southpark . That was such a funny episode.

No shit. The more I think about this the more I really seriously get pissed off. 25 points. Fucking NASCAR. I think if they were going to fine Jr it should have been on the entertainment side. Meaning if he fucked up on the track fine him points. If he fucks up out of the car fine him money. Big money even to him. Maybe $200,000- $500,000(cough). Im not denying he fucked up, just saying the penalty cost way too much in the stock car world.

Is it just me or do threads that talk about profanity, always seem to use more of it, and not just in an example kind of way? hehe
