  • 2nd Worst day of my life

    Just wanted to vent.

So I am just ready to send out my money order to Chris, the guy who laser cuts flanges up in Canada. Well the first set he did for me for $70. Not too bad. Plus from what I hear they look great. They were delayed a lot, it took some 2 months to get them. But I got over it without a problem since I didn't need them right away anyway. So for the next set, which are more simple, he hikes the price from 70 to 130. $60. SO I was like ouch, but I still need them. So his quote is 130. So I bought the money order, was ready to send it. Check email once more, turns out he now wants $200. Thats $130 more than the first set, and they are easier! So I'm pretty pissed right now, cuz I have to find someone else, while living some 500 miles away where I need them sent. I mean the flanges are great and he seems like a good guy and all, but the price hikes, alogn with the heavy delay on the first set, it's pretty bad business technique. You normally stick to a quote.

Then today some dumb fucks stole some shit form me while I was in the shower. A $230 cell phone, some clothes, and a towel. My room was locked, btu this stuff was in the outer stall, only a curtain seperating me from it. I was pissed. However I did get it all back, thank god. After the asswipes took 42 pics with the phone, sent 18 text messages, and talked on it for 18 min, 19 sec. They have to pay for all the usage, even though I get text messaging free. And even tho I can charge the battery, they have to buy me a new one. So its cool that OSU can get it paid for, but that it happened in the first place is a total disgrace to people's morals. And these guys didn't even know me either.

And I had a REALLY REALLY REALLY bad day at work.

And I found out that the motor in my red car is in fact frozen, even tho it has only 106k, and the interior/exterior are in PERFECT condition and the oil is clean and topped off.

Goddamn I need beer and vodka and sex right now.

Oh and a Ar15 with 98 magazines would help too.

tell the guy to ram the flanges sideways. that is ridiculous.

if the engine has been sitting a while, spray some PB blaster in the spark plug holes and let it set a couple days. then if you can, get a breaker on the crank pulley bolt and try and spin it over. the rings could be rusted to the cylinder walls. don't give up on it too easy.

My dad had a 2ft breaker bar on the crank and he said that if he put any more pressure on it, that bold was gonna break right off. And I believe him. I might just tow the thing at like 30mph, then drop the clutch That'll either break it free, or fuck it up. LOL

I'm gonna pull the motor this winter and see whats up with it. Hope fully rebuild it and put it into the white car.

Chris "offered to take the hit" and give them to me at $150. I'm still pissed that he can't hold to his quote. I swear to God I won't order form him again, will not give him a good review, and if these flanegs are anything but perfect I'm gonna be pissed. $150 for a piece of 1/4" steel with holes in it

I have a friend who is a master fabricator. He owns his own custom fab. shop. He'd probably do flanges for like $50.

I don't know what your design looks like, but I'm sure even with shipping it would be cheaper. And they would be perfect.

ok now my side of the story.. yes, i said id do them, but when my end raises the price what am i to do? maybe if i worked there and the quote upped then id understand. At the least, i have to take half a day off work, drive into the city and make a special trip to get these, then goto the postal office and box them up. what can i say about the price.... well the guy thinks its a big pain to only setup a 5 x 10 foot sheet of 1/2 or 3/8ths material on this laser cutter only to make 2 pieces.... im just trying to do you a favor, and if he increases the price, what am i to do ? just bend over and take the hit? no i have to pass it onto you.... if he didnt raise the price then i wouldnt either but remember guys, im trying to do a favor here, and im getting shot down.

like i said to aaron, ill refund the money if there is a substantial difference.

Setup costs are a huge factor, especially if only doing small quantities. Especially when outsourcing the work. Take for example...

I was working with a company a few years back to get flanges made for the 3x00s. I already had the design done in CAD, so it just needed to be programmed into the machine ($$) and cut. It was going to cost me $350 for 1 set!. But, if I ordered 20 sets, then it was going to be $450. So, $350 per set or $22.50 per set.

Unfortunately, I'm gonna have to side with Chris on this one. One-off parts are going to be more expensive than multiple copies of parts. I bet, Aaron, that you probably could have gotten 10 or so sets for just a little bit more money, then sold them at a reasonable price, and come back down to where it seemed more affordable in the end.

but brad, if you quote someone $130 then tell them to send $200 - who is in the wrong here?

i'm not one to side with aaron on ANYTHING, but if i tell someone i can put a door in their house for $500 and the supplier made the door that i was getting for $200 before cost $450 now, i have to do it cause thats what i told them i would do it for. same goes here. if i tell aaron i can get his flanges for $130, then they up the price on me, i'd honor the $130 quote and bite the bullet on this one. its the difference between looking like a stand-up guy or looking like an ass.

i've screwed up shipping costs before and i don't go ask someone for $30 more cause i entered the incorrect box size on the calculator. i chalk it up to the cost of doing business and make sure i am more careful next time.

the only way i see chris being in the right is if he quoted the $130 and aaron put off sending the cash for 2 weeks or more.

I see your point... I forgot exactly what Aaron initially said, and don't feel like rereading it. But, at the same time, if Aaron felt he was really getting screwed, he could just have cancelled the order and requested the money back. And then went looking for a different supplier.

It was after 2 weeks form the original quote that he bumped it. About a month. But it was like all along I was saying ok gimme a week, and your 130 is in the mail. I was waiting on the TBs at the time. I got them, made the copies, and bought the 130. I gave him an email saying I'm sending them out tomorrow, and he says wait, send 200. I mean I had already purchased the fing mo. So since then he says 150, and I will be sending that otu in the next day or so. I looked around for someone else, but they wanted me to send them a CAD file, and I can't scan these into CAD.
