  • New Job

Y'all gonna hate me now. I didn't post on this till I checked it out. I was hired at Jergens Innovative Technologies recently, and after 1 week of work, I feel I found a home. I am the Mold Technician. I diagnose problems with Plastic Injection Molds and proceed to fix them. My welding and machinist background did it. Pay is awesome! And the job is only 8 minutes away. Here is why you will hate me. We make parts for, ....EEEWWW...Honda,......EEEWWW,......Subaru,..... and EEEWWW..... Mitsubishi! I feel so dirty! Do I have to leave here?

Dude! If I could, I would. But, (and I am sure you know.), before a plastic mold can be finished, and put in production, we are talking more money than you and I will make in our lifetime. I can steal a Honda door handle though!

That's a sweet job, I wanted to work plastic at some company that makes window parts close to here, but they stuck me in the cam and bolt assembly blah so I quit after my fingers started swelled up. The supervisor wanted me to, get this, do 1000 more in a shift, I was already assembling 3500+ not including hand built ones.

Anyway I am waiting on a position with Raven Industries. There I get to use a soldering iron and build electronics. The cool thing is they pay for all the certs!! yearly.

Welcome to the injection molding club RBC. What end are you in? Sounds like a kind of mold maintenance/repair right?Im a Plastics set up technican for Maytag. We handle everything from setting /pulling molds to running the process and making a good part. Of course thats a general description as there is one hell of a lot more to it. If I can find it Ill send you the Code of Plastics(you will enjoy). You have to work in the plastics industry to understand tho. BTW I enjoy my job to. Something a little different every day and pays pretty good.

I too am right at 8 minutes away from work. Makes it nice to be able to sleep till 20 till and still make it to work on time! My buddy lives by Paducha Ky and drives an hour to get here . Even tho he buys his gas in Kentucky gas prices are still killing him.

StudlyCamaro: I live over in Herrin. I do make it to the strip probably 3-4 times a season although I didnt make it up there last weekend(liked to have seen those cars run). Went to the fair instead. BTW IIRC I read in one of your posts you worked on go carts or something with SIU. Was that the one I checked out in SIUs tent at DuQuoin?

(Today I made it in seven ) The job gets sweeter everyday. Most of the common workers treat me with respect, 'cause when they have a problem with a mold, processing, parts, or the machine, I am the one who bails them out. Most of them are on piece-work, and when the machine is not running or producing good parts, their pay goes down. Kinda neat really. Workers like me and Management likes me. Best of both worlds! See if you can find that "Code", bud36. I'd like to see it.

RBC! My job fits in that category also. The workers (have) to like you and management has to tolerate you. Nice little fit. In fact my bosses always say they want to see us sitting at a break table because that means everything is running good, we are not working on anything and they have one less worry and oh hell I could go on all night about why I like my job.

ya didnt miss much last weekend... how can you call it the worlds fastest street car challenge when its bracket racing?????

yeah i worked on the formula car for a while, but due to the team captains' methods of going about certain things i (and a few other members) stopped working, but yes i did a substantial ammount of work on the car that was produced in 2002 (im not sure if they have even completed one since then)

but anyway back to plastics... :P , when i used to work in a vinegar factory , we used to allways get pissed at the people that made the bottles that were easily crushed when they were full of hot vinegar

Man I would really like to be able to make custom parts but plastics is VERY cost prohibited. Even a small 1 cavity aluminum mold would break the bank. Just guestimating a build price for a door handle would be in the range of $25,000- 30,000 minimum(from a professional mold shop with design engineering included). Then add mold shop shot time which really doesnt get any cheaper than $15 an hour plus material cost and 1 part is going to be real expensive. Of course this is where the cheap part comes in. You have to make X amount to justify the cost. From there things get REALLY cheap fast. Sure you can find a guy with a die grinder and a block of metal and make a crude mold for a couple grand combined. But would it have that pro look to it?.
