  • Exhaust

Pretty sure after the f23 swap the next thing I do will be exhaust. Gonna order one of these kits

A couple v-band clamps. And some bungs. All welding will be done by me. Exhaust will be straight through. Might throw a muffler on the back.

    Opinions?

not too bad, I bought a "Hot rod dual exhaust kit" from Summit with all mandrel bends like that for about $100 more a while back.

Just remember to paint the tubing and clean the welds really well, then paint them too. Otherwise it'll rust pretty quick. Use engine enamel or something rated for the heat.

It might be different with a full length exhaust but I ran my Fiero with no muffler for a while and it was way too loud. Also my Firebird with open 3.5" downpipe was rediculous.

Or you can just run bozo pipes above the trunk which should make the exhaust almost inaudible inside the car while making it rediculously loud for everyone else lol.

Bozo pipes make vomit hover at the rear of my throat. Some paint was definitely on the list as most of the v-band clamps are stainless and anyone that has welded stainless with mild steel filler knows that rust happens fast. Thanks for the ideas. 2.5" seem okay? My 325i had 2.5" so I thought it would be okay for 3100

I used rustoleum grill paint on the "tube manifold" stock header style exhaust on my truck a couple years ago. It's held up great. It doesn't look like the day I did it, but it hasn't flaked off anywhere and still looms good.

I was thinking either that or the VHT. Any input on that?

My VHT rusted through on my 92. About half of the front manifold is rust instead of aluminum colored. I just looked at the ranger and it's starting to get spots, but not as bad as the VHT.

Granted the 92 does run a bit hotter than my truck, so take that into consideration.

I used VHT on my turbo headers, ran them for 15,000kms, and the paint hasn't flaked off yet

i've used VHT, even baked it in an oven like it describes, and it still flaked off within a year on a turbine housing that was never even run...... so i'm kind of reluctant to mention it.

Well, I can say surface prep on the 92 was good. I mean, other than adhesion promoter, you can't get better than sand blasting, lol. I don't recall blasting the truck manifold.

The 92 the way it sits on the stand.

The Ranger the way it sits in the drive.

Like I mentioned before, the DOHC runs hotter (the truck takes a half an hour idling to get heat when it's below freezing), but it was also only driven in warmer weather. Yes the VHT is older (maybe 8-9 years vs ~5-6), but the truck is a daily. The truck paint has also dulled more than I last recall, but that thing rarely gives me a reason to pop the hood.

Another thing to keep in mind is that I probably won't be painting the manifolds. Just gonna leave the heat shields on those. For the first round I will only be painting from the collector back. To prevent rust on pipe and especially around weldd

you can buy mild steel V bands, that's what I used on my last set of headers. the band itself is stainless but the 2 flanges are coated steel. no problem welding aluminized pipe to them.
