  • Rough idle after high rpm, need some ideas.

I've had to take my truck up in the r's higher than it cares for a couple of times now and it doesn't like it. I don't know if it's because it's old and grumpy because it's got 211k+ on it or what, but the fact remains, my truck doesn't like it. I admit, I don't know my old 2.3 like I should, it does a good job of staying reliable, but this problem irritates me. The two times I've had to take it to the redline it has retaliated with a rough idle that takes a few days to go away. My thoughts were that I had some lifters that were not pumping up because of the higher load placed on them so I was considering replacing all the lifters and possibly the oil pump as well to make sure they are getting the oil supply they need. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Edit: I would like to add that once the rpms go above about 1500 or so it sounds fine and nice and smooth again.

I agree, it sounds like your blowing out the lifters and floating the valves. Old Buick motors would do that too.
sigpicHow to make High performance Emissions:
A "true" High flow converter, straight pipe.
Low/No flow EGR valve, block off plate.
Carbon canister and purge valve mod, place in large 30 Gallon can, cover, and place curbside, the city will do the rest.
PCV valve and vent tube, reroute to exhaust to dump where it belongs, on the ground. Or add breathers and let it all free.

Good to know I'm not the only one thinking is the lifters, thanks

Considering checking out a cam from Esslinger if I have to remove it, lol.
