  • first engine swap...

what was your first engine swap?

Mine was a 1979 El Camino, started life as a 305 2 bbl, I then threw a 4bbl on it, and then spun a rod bearing, so in went a 350... I was 16 years old.

Not the first engine swap, but I helped my dad rebuild a 67 VW from the ground up when I was 12 (sister's first car). That included rebuilding the engine. Started on my ground up resto of a 73 Chevelle when I was 14, for my first car. When I was 17, built up a 400SB to replace the stock 307 in it.

I helped my step dad swap 4 cylinder engines in a Datsun King Cab pickup when I was 10, I was a big kid and he had me breaking loose all the bolts UNDER the car, a great way to learn in retrospect.

"It's your car. Do with it what you wish, but as you enter this unknown world you will need to invent the wheel all over again. For the adventurous and those that are backyard mechanics who have nothing but time you might like this. Most have plenty of frustrating moments and the process usually takes significantly longer then what anyone could imagine. The end result of this conversion is completely up to you." - Jon McCullough of BMCautos.com
