    I wasn't sure where to post this - It's not a 60 degree V6, but it's attached to one...

I have a Trooper with the 2.8, and a 4L30 automatic transmission. I've asked about this on the Isuzu forums, but those guys aren't very helpful unless you're one of a select few. Hopefully, someone here knows their transmissions, and can give me some assistance.

Here's what happens: After sitting for a day or so, I don't have reverse, or gears 2,3,4. Putting the shifter in R or D gives me no power to the wheels. If I put the shifter in 1, it will run in first gear. After I have the truck rolling, if I should then put it in drive, I will have a normally operating automatic transmission, until such time as I bring it to a halt. I'll have to do the start-in-first-and-shift-to-D routine for a couple of traffic lights, then it's fine - it will go anywhere, no slipping, no weird shifting, and it will have reverse. If you shut it off, and come back later, it will be fine. Something else that seems to happen, is I'll start the truck, Be able to back up with it, and get out into the street, and then D won't work, and I'll have to put it in first - only after it's sat long enough to cool off.

What should I be looking at? Fluid? Filter? It's such an oddly specific problem, does the same thing every time, and once it's warmed up, it acts just fine. Fluid level is correct, fluid is clean, and the rest of the truck is so nice I've halfway talked myself into converting to a manual, so I won't have to deal with stupid auto trans gremlins.

It sounds like the forward input band is having trouble engaging for whatever reason. I'm guessing wear in the valve body is allowing fluid by in a spot until heat closes the tolerances or the forward servo piston assembly needs work.
