  • Cruise Control Switch Repair...

It seems that ALL the cruise control stalks you find at the JY nowdays are non-working. The Cruise switch doesn't work. Tired of paying $40 for a new stalk, I decided to dismantle and attempt repairs to what I had.

The stalk is glued together and there will be some minor cosmetic damage during the disassmbly, but if you file down the burs before gluing it back together it is not serious.

This is the stalk I am going to repair.

First, separate it at the joint. I was able to grip a pair of wire stripper pliers into the joint and force the stalk apart. Slide out the switch by feeding the cable into the shaft.

Pull off the outer end of the stalk housing. The SET button cap will pop out.

Carefully slide out the OFF/ON R/A lever.

The switch is held together by clips AND 4 plastic welded areas. I filed away the welded areas and carefully lifted the clips. You can see the dark discolored areas on the contacts.

Cleaned the contacts on the housing, and bent the movable contacts up so they will have more pressure on the circuit board. Put a little bit of dielectric grease (NON HARDENING) on the slide.

Snap the switch back together and insert it into the stalk housing. Carefully slide the cable through the shaft.

At this time, it would be wise to make a functional test with ohm meter.

Now, apply CA glue, carefully, to only this small area of the stalk.

Assemble the end of the stalk and press HARD down to fix the end housing to the stalk.

Should look like this. Snap the SET button cap onto the switch and that is the repair! You just saved $40.

Hope this helps! Some day I will do a writeup on the cruise servo repair, for when the cruise will engage but loses speed.

    Thanks!
