I bought it because it did have a 2.2 ha ha, at least its a 5 speed, i wanted something that sips gas, and yes its slow as balls, but i'll only have to fill up once a week now instead of twice a week.
In all fairness though, my dad had a '96 S10 long bed with the 2.2L/5 speed combo. Lasted over 155k original clutch and all, was running great until a bitch hit him head on in an intersection. He did like 10k mile oil changes on it too, one set of brakes, and one tuneup.
My dad has a 1988 S10, 4.3L TBI 4-speed auto. The factory motor went to 175k, and it just needed a vlave job. It still ran tho. So we bought a new motor, and figured we'd do the trans at the same time. Those are the ONLY problems it has ever given us, and it is now at 205k
actualy with some minor engine mods they will "keep up" with a stock 4/3.
I hang on s-10planet and they have have some stuff in the 4 cyl perfomance area about beefing up a 2.2.
They do make a charger for that engine, but you have to make power first to get any power with a charger.
I own 2 s-10s myself. a 1st gen and an 03 2nd gen. not to mention the pos Lumina with the broken intake bolts and a project dodge pickup.

Those xtremes always bugged me. Not the way they look or anything, but their engine choices. Which are the same stock engines you get in the regular S-10. That's not extreme. Being lowered and all that is a step in the right direction though.
Anyone driven the new Colorados? Unlike the S-10, the slowest a Colorado gets is a 2.8L I4 at 175hp. The 3.5L I5 puts out 220hp. Now a good extreme would be the 4.2L I6 in it. w00t. Anyways, the 220hp I5 moves very nicely. A lot more responsive than the S-10s. Gets 18/24 mpg too. Not half bad. What's that 2.2L supposed to get? Can't be assed to look it up.
nice truck. congrats.
so when's the 3400 getting dropped in?? Do it, you know you want to.....
It actually got done once. A guy with a 1995 2.2L put in a Camaro 3.4L.
A 3400 would have been nicer. But I guess it would have to be a Hybrid since there are no 3400 RWD blocks.

the added weight to colorodos and canyon totale offsets any HP gains you get with the more powerfull engines. Keep that chevy give flywheel HP, the heavyer the vehecle the more you lose before HP get to the ground.
Yes I have driven A colorodo with an I5. In fact I drive one all the time. It's more moded that my sio and slow compaired to my s-10 w/4.3 and you only get 195 flywheel HP in an s-10(if you have the HO engine) and i now get 27mpg hwy just by improveing the breathing
The INline engines will pull more though and you don't have the body roll you have with the dimes, but you lose some of your conering because of the stiffened front supension. It a trade off performance for strength.
I've been seeing alot of of the dime replasments in the body shop for factory work though. rear doors, leaking seals, rubber trim falling off, and GM didn't quite get the comp to work as well with the inline engines as they should have.

ahem... you do realize the 2200 uses the starter on the same side as a 3400, (FWD side) the starter on a 4.3L is on the Pass side of the vehicle, but on the 2200 its on the drivers side eh...
the transmissions between the 2200 and the 4.3L are different. the 2.2L uses the NVG 1500 where as the 4.3L has the NVG 3500 transmission.
i think the 1500 5spd trans would take the abuse of the 3400 decently..
