It might seem like the "Leap of Faith" I'm suggesting that we buffer our thinking with is unnecessary because it might seem like this dialogue "Leaps Time"...both Forwards and Backwards too much to make sense. However... the idea that all of this worry and toil over the construction, design and creation of an Artificially Intelligent Entity is just SO far into the Future as to be foolish to contemplate before we get there is not what is actually happening. Nothing could be further from the truth... just look at what is coming within this year alone. For example. The latest dust-up at large is whether or not the United States Government is badly in need of yet another regulatory agency...ostensibly...one of Science... similar to NASA... as the means to gain oversight on the burgeoning field of Fully Autonomous Driving Vehicles...that have NO STEERING WHEELS TO BE COUNTERMANDED BY HUMAN INTERVENTION. The Google Cars are NOT something that will occur way off in the future...but NOW... Right now...these unoccupied vehicles are being operated autonomously all over the country...racking up hundreds of thousands of miles in order for the Genius Peeps at Google to "Fine Tune the Operational Algorithm".
With the end of the Era of the Baby-Boomers...as the men and women of my generation age towards the end of their lives, there will soon be an explosion of activity involving the use of Home and Hospital Care Robots that will essentially be the Digital Robotic equivalent of everything out of Human Resources. These will be adaptable to cover every job... from Pin-Stripers putting the Daily Newspaper at the foot of the beds occupied by Long Term Care patients...to Robotic Critical Care Nurses lifting them up physically from their hospital beds to their Gurneys and Wheel Chairs. And when it comes to the higher end of Medicine...Fully Automated Robotic Surgery will become the order of the day... and all of these new-fangled hunks of extremely capable machinery will only need an occasional drop of oil here...or a filter dusting there...and this to will be done, not by Human Repair Mechanics... but by OTHER ROBOTS. The arrival of this paradigm of innovation and automation will ruin the need for intelligent and resourceful Human Beings to live useful, productive and long lives and relegate the major decisions about our lives to the automated decision making of ... Machines. We will do all of these things... because by and large, Human Beings value their comfort and their selfishness over the need to think or solve problems or create solutions on their own and will surrender themselves to these Robots without the slightest bit of resistance.
